Griffins Win Game One of NCAA Super Regional

For the second straight season, the Seton Hill baseball team played in the NCAA Atlantic Super Regional, this year's super took place in Indiana, PA as the Griffins battled IUP.

Seton Hill used a Max Mandler solo homer in the seventh to defeat IUP 5-4 and take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.  SHU is now 41-15 on the season while the Crimson Hawks drop to 36-13.  

After the Griffins went in order in the top of the first inning, IUP used a single and double followed by an RBI groundout to take an early 1-0 lead over the Griffins.  

The Griffins retook the lead in the third.  Max Mandler led off with a single to center.  After a flyout, Noah Sweeney singled on a perfectly executed hit and run to put runners on first and third.  Owen Henne then executed another hit a run with a single that scored Mandler and moved Sweeney to third.  Jack Oberdorf then singled to center field scoring Sweeney and giving the Griffins a 2-1 lead.  

The Crimson Hawks tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single.  

SHU retook the lead in the top of the sixth.  Henne singled to center to start the inning.  Jack Oberdorf doubled down the left field line to score Henne and put the Griffins back in front.  Matt Frazetta singled thru the left side of the infield to score Oberdorf and give SHU a 4-2 lead.  

IUP then used a double, single and wild pitch to score a run and cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth.  A sacrifice fly from the Crimson Hawks tied the score at four in the sixth.  

Max Mandler homered to left field to lead off the seventh inning and give the Griffins a 5-4 lead. 

Andino Vecchiolla was able to strand two runners in the seventh getting the last out on a force out.  Michael Marinchak came on with two outs in the eighth to get a ground out and strand two runners on base.  Marinchak then struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game.  

Vecchiolla earned the win in relief.  He now has five on the season.  Marinchak picked up his fifth save with 1.1 scoreless.  He struck out three.  

Jack Oberdorf led the offense with three hits and two RBI.  Henne and Max Mandler each had two hits.  Mandler scored a pair of runs and homered.

Game two of the best of three is scheduled to start at 11 AM on Saturday morning.
