Seton Hill began play in the NCAA Atlantic Regional with a matchup with #3 seed Millersville at Creekview Park in Stroudsburg, PA on Thursday afternoon.
Aidan Layton was spectacular on the mound and the Griffins used two long balls in a 5-0 win over the Marauders to move on in the regional. SHU is now 37-14 overall while Millersville falls to 37-15 overall.
Layton gave up a pair of singles to start the game but then got a fly out and two strikeouts to end the bottom of the first. After the first two hits, Layton retired 15 straight hitters.
SHU got on the board in the top of the third inning.
Noah Sweeney singled to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a balk and scored on a two out, two run homer to left from
Owen Mandler that put the Griffins in front 2-0.
Owen Sabol homered to lead off the top of the fourth inning to extend the Griffins lead to 3-0. Layton struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Seton Hill added another run in the sixth. With two outs, the Griffins got back to back doubles from
Max Mandler and
Matt Frazetta to extend their lead to 4-0.
The Griffins added an insurance run in the eighth inning. With one out,
Elijah Snider drew a walk. Pinch runner
Aidan Shephard moved to second on a wild pitch. Sabol singled and Shephard moved to third on a fly out. Shephard then scored on an errant throw to third on a pickoff attempt as SHU built a 5-0 lead.
Layton improved to 7-2 with eight shutout innings. Aidan struck out a career high 14 while only walking two. He scattered five hits in the win.
Michael Marinchak threw a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout.
Jack Oberdorf had two hits to lead the Griffins.
Owen Mandler and Sabol each homered. Mandler drove in two.
SHU will next play host East Stroudsburg on Friday afternoon at 2 PM.
