Seton Hill continued play with a PSAC West doubleheader in California, PA against the Vulcans on Wednesday afternoon.
California (PA) had a pair three run innings in a 7-3 game one victory. SHU earned a doubleheader split with a 9-4 win in game two. SHU is now 25-9 overall and 13-3 in the west while CalU is 12-11 overall and 10-5 in the west.
The Griffins took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Morgan Toal led off the inning with a double.
Brooke Cleland reached on a fielders choice with pinch runner
Alexis Bonatch moving to third.
Bre Athey stole second to put runners on second and third.
Mackenzie Zang knocked in Bonatch with a ground out and
Brooklyn Fukushima reached on a fielders choice with Athey beating the throw to the plate to give SHU a 2-0 lead.
CalU responded with three runs in the bottom half of their inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Vulcans added three more in the third to take a 6-2 lead.
The Griffins got a run back in the fifth on a solo shot from
Grace Paredes to lead off the inning.
Cal answered with a run in their half of the fifth to take a 7-3 lead.
Toal led the offense with three hits. Paredes finished with two.
SHU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two.
Camryn Murphy drew a one out walk. She stole second base and scored on a Toal double.
CalU answered back in their half of the second inning. They put up a three spot to take a 3-1 lead.
Seton Hill cut the lead in half in the fourth. Paredes singled and
Juliette Vybiral pinch ran for Paredes. She moved to second on a wild pitch and just beat the throw to the plate when
Kassidy Wittig reached on an error.
The Griffins took the lead for good in the fifth. Zang drew a leadoff walk.
Bre Athey reached on a bunt base hit and
Nina Grandey singled to put runners on first and third with one out. Murphy tripled into the left center field gap scoring two and tying the game at four. Paredes followed with an RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch that gave SHU a 6-4 lead.
SHU added two more in the sixth.
Lauren Dellett singled and moved to third on a two base error. She scored when she beat the throw to the plate as Zang reached on a fielders choice. Grandey and Murphy walked to load the bases. Zang scored when Paredes reached on a fielders choice that put the Griffins in front 8-4. The Griffins added an insurance run in the seventh.
Brooklyn Fukushima singled with one out. Dellett drew a walk. Zang then singled to right to drive in Fukushima and extend the lead to 9-4.
Paredes and Fukushima each had two hits. Murphy, Zang and Paredes each drove in two.
Logan Hartman earned her 14
th win with another complete game effort. She struck out three in the win.
The Griffins will return to action on Saturday when they host Mercyhurst for a PSAC West doubleheader on Senior Day.
