After a pair of rainouts on Sunday and an off day on Monday, the Griffins finally kicked off their spring break trip on Tuesday with a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon and evening.
In game one, Goldey Beacom scored eight runs over a three inning stretch for an 8-4 win over the Griffins. The Griffins rallied from 3-0 down to win 7-3 over WV Wesleyan in game two. SHU is now 9-3 on the season.
The Griffins got on the board first in game one vs Goldey Beacom.
Nina Grandey reached on an error and stole second. She later scored when
Camryn Murphy singled to give SHU a 1-0 lead.
Goldey Beacom scored three unearned runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead over the Griffins.
The Lightning added a run in the third and four more in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.
SHU scored in the seventh.
Brooklyn Fukushima singled to lead off the inning and scored when
Nina Grandey singled. Later in the inning, Grandey scored on a sacrifice fly from
Morgan Toal.
Grace Paredes singled to score Zang and make it 8-4.
Lauren Dellett singled to score Murphy and cut the lead to 8-5.
Fukushima, Dellett and Grandey had two hits for the Griffins.
In game two, WV Wesleyan had three hits to start their bottom half of the first and used a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead over the Griffins.
The Bobcats added a run in the bottom of the third with a two out RBI single to increase their lead to 2-0. WVWC added another run in the fourth to increase their lead to 3-0.
SHU tied the game at three in a crazy fifth inning. After an out
Bre Athey singled. She stole second and moved to third on a Grandey single. Grandey stole second and Athey scored on a obstruction call at home when
Mackenzie Zang reached. Zang stole second and both runners scored when Toal singled to tie the game at three.
In the seventh, Athey singled and stole second to lead off the inning. Grandey singled to center to give SHU a 4-3 lead. Zang reached on an error with Grandey moving to third. Grandey scored on a
Camryn Murphy RBI single. Two hitters later,
Kassidy Wittig singled in two more to give SHU a 7-3 advantage.
Logan Hartman improves to 5-1 with the win. She struck out six. Grandey was a perfect 4-4 in the game. Toal, Wittig and Athey each had two hits.
The Griffins are off on Wednesday and will return with a doubleheader in Auburndale on Thursday against Thomas More and Glenville State.
