Baseball Splits DH at CalU

Seton Hill closed out their four game set with a doubleheader against California (PA) in Washington, PA on Saturday afternoon.

SHU took game one of the doubleheader with a 3-1 win before the Vulcans earned the split with a 6-1 win in game two.  SHU falls to 17-9 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC while the Vulcans improve to 17-6 overall and 6-2 in the west.

The Vulcans used a hit batter, two groundouts and a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the third of game one.

The Griffins tied the game in the fifth.  With one out, Jack Whalen singled.  He moved to second on a groundout before scoring on an Owen Mandler single.

SHU won the game in the seventh.  Jakob Haynes doubled to lead off the inning.  Joe Fiedor pinch ran.  Whalen reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and third.  Whalen stole second to put runners on second and third with one out.  Fiedor was out at the plate when Owen Henne reached on a fielders choice.  Owen Mandler came thru with a big two out hit on a 1-1 pitch as he doubled to score two and give the Griffins a 3-1 lead.

Owen Mandler and Whalen each had two hits.  Aidan Layton earned the complete game win.  He allowed a run on two hits while striking out four.

In game two, the Vulcans took an early 2-0 lead with a two run homer in the bottom of the first.

The Griffins got one of those runs back in the third on a sacrifice fly from Owen Henne.

Cal hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 6-1.

SHU will travel to Frostburg State for a non conference matchup on Tuesday.
