Griffins, Vulcans Split PSAC West DH

Seton Hill returned to PSAC West play as they hosted California (PA) in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

The Vulcans took game one by the score of 3-2 before the Griffins walked off the Vulcans with a 6-5, 8 inning win in game two.  SHU is now 16-8 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC West while Cal is 16-5 overall and 5-1 in the PSAC West.

CalU took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins with a solo homer in the top of the second.  The Griffins responded right back with a leadoff solo homer from Matt Frazetta in the bottom of the second.

The Vulcans retook the lead with another solo homer in the top of the third.  CalU picked up an unearned run in the fifth to increase their lead to 3-1.

SHU cut the lead in half in the sixth.  Owen Sabol doubled to lead off the sixth.  He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Max Mandler sacrifice fly.  SHU threatened to tie it in the seventh.  Aidan Shephard doubled to lead off the inning.  He moved to third on a fly out but a foul out and strike out ended the contest.

Owen Henne had two hits for SHU.  Brandon Bergert struck out 8 and allowed two earned runs but was given the loss.

The Griffins jumped on CalU for five runs in the bottom of the first of game two.  Owen Mandler singled with one out.  Jack Oberdorf singled to put two runners on.  Owen Sabol singled to score Mandler and give SHU a 1-0 lead.  Later in the inning, Frazetta doubled to score Sabol.  Jakob Haynes followed with a three run bomb to left field to give SHU the 5-0 lead.

CalU got single runs in the second and third and then scored three in the sixth to tie the game at five.

SHU then won it in the bottom of the eighth.  Colin Ahr reached on an error.  Joe Alcorn pinch ran for Ahr and moved to second on a Braden Durham single.  Shephard then doubled to right center field to score Alcorn and give SHU the win.

Oberdorf, Max Mandler, Frazetta and Haynes each had two hits.  Christian Zilli threw 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the win.  He allowed just one hit and struck out 3.
