Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Mercyhurst

Seton Hill kicked continued PSAC West play with a doubleheader in Erie against Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon
 
The Lakers took game one of the doubleheader by the score of 4-3.  SHU earned the split of the doubleheader and four game set with a 13-2 victory in game two.  SHU is now 14-7 overall and 2-2 in the west. 
 
Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the second inning of game one.  They used a leadoff single, two ground outs and a two out single to take the lead.  The Lakers added another run in the fourth to increase their lead to 2-0. 
 
SHU tied the game up in the fifth.  Aidan Shephard singled to lead off the inning and Noah Sweeney walked to put two on.  Both stole a bag to put runners on second and third.  Jack Whalen singled to score Shephard and cut the lead to 2-1.  Whalen stole second to put runners back and second and third with no outs.  Owen Mandler hit a sacrifice fly to score Sweeney and tie the game at two.  The Griffins stranded two in the inning. 
 
Mercyhurst took advantage of a Griffin error to score two unearned runs and retake the lead 4-2. 
 
SHU threatened in the seventh.  With one out, Whalen singled and stole second.  He scored on an Owen Mandler RBI single to cut the lead to 4-3.  The Lakers then got two strikeouts to end the threat. 
 
Whalen had two hits to lead the Griffins.  Aidan Layton threw all six innings.  He allowed two earned runs and struck out five. 
 
The Griffin offense woke up in game two as they scored seven times in the first two innings. 
 
Owen Mandler was hit by a pitch to open the game.  He stole second and scored on a double from Jack Oberdorf as SHU took a 1-0 lead in the first. 
 
SHU added six more runs in the second, all after two outs.  Owen Henne walked and stole second.  Aidan Shephard was hit by a pitch.  The runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt.  After another ground out, Owen Mandler was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Max Mandler singled to score two.  Mandler stole second and two more runs scored on a Oberdorf single to give SHU a 5-0 lead.  Owen Sabol then homered over the left field wall to extend the Griffin lead to 7-0.
 
The Griffins added three more in the fifth and three more in the sixth in the win. 
 
In the fifth, Whalen doubled in a run while Owen Mandler added an RBI single and Sabol drove in one with a sacrifice fly. 
 
Whalen and Oberdorf knocked in runs in the sixth for the Griffins. 
 
Oberdorf had three hits and drove in four. Owen Mandler, Sabol, Colin Ahr and Whalen each added two hits.  Andino Vecchiolla earned the win.  He struck out six in five innings.   
 
The Griffins will play a non conference nine inning contest on Tuesday as they host Shippensburg.
