Seton Hill returned home from Florida with an important three game set with Grand Valley State. SHU and Grand Valley played a single nine inning contest on Friday afternoon.
The Griffins used a spectacular pitching performance from
Brandon Bergert and the long ball from the offense in a 6-0 shutout win over the Lakers. SHU is now 10-5 overall while GVSU falls to 8-6.
The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a leadoff bomb to left center field from
Owen Sabol.
Seton Hill extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth. With one out,
Jack Whalen singled thru the middle. He stole second and scored when
Jack Oberdorf homered to left center field.
SHU added two more runs in the sixth. With two outs,
Max Mandler singled and scored when
Jakob Haynes launched an 0-1 pitch halfway across Pro Grass field to extend the SHU lead to 5-0.
The Griffins added an insurance run in the eighth.
Max Mandler doubled to lead off the inning and later scored when
Noah Sweeney reached on a bunt single.
Bergert was nearly perfect for the Griffins on the mound. He allowed just one infield single and walked one while striking out eight in eight scoreless innings. He threw 93 pitches in the outing.
Max Mandler and Sweeney led the offense with three hits each. Whalen and Sabol each added two hits. Oberdorf and Haynes each had two run homers.
The Griffins will complete the three game set with a pair of nine inning games on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon.
