After playing their first three contests on the road, the Griffin women's lacrosse team returned home to battle Shippensburg in the home opener for the Griffins.
SHU jumped out to a 9-2 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 19-8 victory over the visiting Raiders.
Grace Agnello and
Skylar Orlowski scored in the first three minutes of the contest to give the Griffins an early 2-0 lead. Ship scored two of the next three goals to cut the SHU lead to 3-2 with 9:14 to play. The Griffins would then close the quarter on a 6-0 run. SHU scored five of those goals in just over a two minute stretch to build an 8-2 lead with 4:34 to play. Agnello scored twice in the run while Orlowski,
Carleigh Sutfin and
Tori Krapp each scored on during the run.
Makenna Twombly scored the final goal of the quarter for the Griffins.
The second quarter featured a little less scoring as the Griffins outscored the Raiders 3-1.
Piper Conlan,
Brooklyn Miller and Agnello all scored for the Griffins as they took a 12-3 halftime lead.
Orlowski and Twombly scored over a minute stretch as the Griffins opened an 14-3 lead and started the running clock. Midway through the quarter,
Mila Udovicic scored to extend the Griffins lead to 15-3. Ship scored the final goal of the third period.
The Raiders scored four of the first five goals of the fourth quarter as they trimmed the Griffin lead to 16-8 with 3:58 to play but goals from Agnello, Conlan and
Ruby DePalma closed out the scoring.
The Griffins outshot the Raiders 34-23 in the contest and held a 22-8 advantage in draw controls.
Agnello led the Griffins with six goals and an assist. Orlowski added four goals and four assists. Conlan finished with two goals and an assist while Twombly added two goals. DePalma had a goal and four assists while Udovicic added a goal and three assists. Sutfin led the Griffins with eight draw controls.
Allison Hathaway recorded ten saves to earn the win.
SHU will take on New Haven on Sunday afternoon in Sparks, MD.
