Seton Hill returned home to host California (PA) in a PSAC West matchup on Wednesday evening in the McKenna Center.
The Vulcans were able to force 26 Griffin turnovers in route to a 78-69 win over the Griffins. SHU falls to 12-10 overall and 9-7 in the PSAC while Cal is now 15-7 overall and 10-6 in the PSAC.
Baskets from
Sakeria Haralson and
Christiane Frye gave SHU an early 4-0 lead. A fast break bucket from
Helene Cowan extended the lead to 6-2 with 6:48 left in the quarter. Trailing 11-8,
Mia Kalich hit two free throws and Frye drained a three to give SHU a 13-11 lead before the Vulcans scored the final basket of the quarter to tie the score at 13.
Marian Haggerty gave SHU a 15-13 lead early in the second quarter. A three point play from Frye gave SHU an 18-17 lead with 8:21 to play in the half. That would be the final lead the Griffins would hold. Cal led 35-28 with 1:33 to play but the Griffins used baskets from
Helene Cowan and Frye and a Mankins free throw to cut the lead to 35-33 with 53 seconds left. Cal led 39-33 at the half.
A layup from Haralson and a three from
Hallie Cowan cut the lead to 43-40 with 6:39 to play. Cal was able to extend their lead throughout the rest of the quarter and led 57-46 at the end of the quarter.
California built their lead to as many as 17 in the fourth quarter but the Griffins battled to cut the lead back to seven late in the contest.
Frye led four Griffins in double figures with 22 points.
Helene Cowan added 16 points.
Hallie Cowan tossed in 11 and Haralson finished with 10.
SHU will host Clarion on Saturday for Senior Day in another PSAC West contest.
