Seton Hill hosted California (PA) in a PSAC West matchup on Wednesday evening in the McKenna Center.
The Vulcans were able to defeat the Griffins in a high scoring contest, 100-93. CalU improves to 19-3 overall and 13-3 in the PSAC. SHU falls to 12-10 overall and 7-9 in the PSAC.
The Griffins jumped out to an early 7-1 lead over the Vulcans on baskets from
Ryan Meis and
Kedrick Curtis and a three from
Dimitrios Sklavenitis. CalU battled back to take a 13-12 lead with 13:43 to play in the half. SHU then went on a 9-0 run as they took a 21-13 lead with 11:19 to play. Four different Griffins scored in the run. A Meis three gave SHU a 24-16 lead midway through the half.
SHU built their lead back up to seven, three times over the final three minutes, the last time on two free throws from Sklavenitis as SHU led 38-31 with 2:08 to play. Cal cut the lead to one but a Curtis basket gave SHU a 40-37 lead with 28 seconds left. Cal hit a three at the buzzer to tie the score at 40 at the halftime break.
Cal opened the second half on a 9-4 run forcing a Griffin timeout. A basket from
Camden Brewer and a three point play from Curtis tied the score at 49 with 16:15 to play. There were three ties over a two minute stretch before Sklavenitis gave SHU a 61-60 lead with 11:51 to play. A three point play from Whitaker gave SHU a 64-60 lead with 11 to play.
A three pointer and layup from Moon erased a five point Cal lead and tied the score at 71 with 7:51 to play. A
Sean Dillon three gave SHU a one point lead at 76-75 with 6:41 to play. Dillon's three tied the game at 79 with 5:12 to play. Over the next three and a half minutes, the Vulcans went on a 15-3 run to take a 94-82 lead with a minute left. SHU was able to cut the lead to five twice in the final minute but would get no closer.
Sklavenitits led five Griffins in double figures with 16 points. Curtis added 13 points. Moon finished with 12. Meis and Dillon each added 11.
SHU will host Clarion on Saturday in PSAC West play.
