Softball Opens Season with Sweep of Chowan

Seton Hill kicked off their 2024 season with a road doubleheader at Chowan on Saturday afternoon in Murfreesburg, NC. 
 
SHU broke out the bats in game one in a 14-0, five inning win.  The Griffins continued the hitting with a 12-4 win in six innings in game two to complete the sweep.
 
The Griffins took the lead in the top of the third inning of game one with a big inning.  Mackenzie Zang led off the inning with a walk.  She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bre AtheyNina Grandey followed with an RBI double down the left field line to score Zang and give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.  Brooklyn Fukushima drew a walk to put runners on first and second.  Camryn Murphy followed with a three run bomb to left to extend the Griffins lead to 4-0.  Grace Paredes singled and scored on an RBI double by Morgan ToalBrooke Cleland and Lauren Dellett walked to load the bases.  Zang doubled to the right center field gap to drive in two and make it 7-0.  Athey knocked in a run with an infield single as the Griffins increased their lead to 8-0.  Zang then scored on an RBI ground out from Fukushima as the Griffins led 9-0.  Murphy then made it a five RBI inning for herself with a two out, two RBI double as the Griffins built their lead to 11-0. 
 
SHU added on in the fourth inning.  Kelleigh Pollock doubled with one out.  Dellett reached on an infield single.  Zang doubled to score Pollock and increase the lead to 12-0.  Dellett then scored on an RBI groundout from Athey as SHU built the lead to 13-0. 
 
Abby Smearman doubled in a run in the fifth to make it 14-0. 
 
Murphy led the Griffins with three hits and five RBI.  Zang added two doubles and three RBI.  Grandey had two hits including the double and an RBI.  Toal had two hits and Athey drove in two.  Dellett earned the win with a complete game three hitter.  She struck out seven.
 
In game two, Chowan took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the bottom of the first.  SHU responded with three runs in their half of the second.  Toal led off the inning with a double. Logan Hartman and Olivia Calvetti walked to load the bases.  A run scored when Athey reached on an error to tie the game at one.  After a foul out, Fukushima singled in two to give SHU a 3-1 lead. 
 
Abby Smearman hit a two run homer in the top of the third to increase the Griffins lead to 5-2.  Chowan cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom half of the inning with a two run homer. 
 
The Griffins added on in the fourth.  Grandey singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on two stolen bases.  She scored on an RBI groundout from Murphy as SHU took a 6-4 lead. 
 
SHU put the game away with four runs in the fifth.  Smearman and Lacey Lynn singled to lead off the inning.  Smearman scored when Calvetti reached on a fielders choice.  Grandey drove in two with a double and Fukushima made it 10-4 with an RBI ground out.  Calvetti drove in the final two runs in the sixth. 
 
Grandey, Paredes and Smearman each had two hits for the Griffins.  Fukushima and Calvetti each drove in three.  Grandey and Smearman each drove in two.  Hartman earned the win in the circle.  She struck out two.  Lynn threw two scoreless innings of relief. 
 
The Griffins will continue their weekend trip in North Carolina with a doubleheader with Barton on Sunday afternoon.
