Griffins Drop First Contest of the Season

Seton Hill concluded their weekend on the eastern side of the state with a non conference matchup at Holy Family in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon. 

SHU saw their 12 game season opening win streak snapped with a 69-61 road loss at Holy Family.  The Griffins fall to 12-1 overall while the Tigers improve to 9-3.  

The Griffins took an early 8-2 lead just 2:30 into the contest behind a basket from Helene Cowan and three baskets from Christiane Frye.  A layup from Helene Cowan extended the lead to 14-7 at the 3:38 mark.  Holy Family then closed the quarter on a 10-3 run to tie the score at 17.

SHU took a 21-19 lead on two free throws from Helene Cowan at the 7:01 mark but the Tigers then scored the next six points as they took a 25-21 lead with 3:52 left in the half.  The Tigers extended their lead to 32-23 with 1:18 to play but a basket from Frye and a Helene Cowan free throw cut the halftime deficit to 32-26.  

The Griffins used a 7-0 run midway through the third quarter as they cut the Tigers lead to 42-41 with 4:11 left in the third.  SHU retook the lead 45-44 on four straight points from Frye with 2:45 left.  Four straight from Holy Family gave the Tigers the lead back.  SHU retook the lead on an Abby Mankins basket with 39 seconds left.  Holy Family responded with a three to take a 51-49 lead with 21 seconds left and took that lead into the fourth quarter.  

Seton Hill used baskets from Sakeria Haralson and Hallie Cowan to take a 53-51 lead a minute into the fourth quarter.  Two Hallie Cowan free throws gave SHU a 57-56 lead with 5:32 to play.  The Griffins would not score again until the 1:25 mark on a basket by Frye as they trailed 67-59 after a 11-0 Tiger run.  

The Griffins shot just 37% from the floor and was only 5-29 from three point land in the loss.  

Frye led the Griffins with a game high 26 points.  Helene Cowan added 20 points.  Hallie Cowan also reached double figures with 11 points.  Kalich finished with 13 rebounds and 5 steals.

SHU will take a break for the Christmas Holiday then return to action as they open PSAC West play on January 3rd at Slippery Rock.
