Seton Hill began their season at Frostburg State University in an Atlantic Regional Challenge as they took on Salem University on Saturday evening.
The Griffins took a twelve point halftime lead and defeated Salem by the score of 71-54 to open the season with a win.
The Griffins got off to a good start from three point land as they hit four threes to open the scoring.
Ryan Meis and
James Rice each hit one and
Edir Ortiz added a pair. A layup from Rice gave SHU a 14-3 lead with 13:16 left in the first half. Midway thru the half,
Kedrick Curtis hit a layup to put the Griffins in front 18-7.
Salem battled back to 22-18 down with 6:52 to play in the half but SHU responded with a 9-0 run to build a 31-18 lead with 2:27 left.
Gabe Gillespie had four points in the run. SHU took a 34-22 lead into the halftime break.
Dimitrios Sklavenitis scored the first four points of the second half for the Griffins. A three from Meis and a Curtis free throw extended the lead to 42-26 with 17:50 to play. SHU added four more points as they pushed their lead to 46-26 with 15:44 to play. Another Meis three and two Curtis free throws extended the lead to 54-32 with 12:23 to play.
Back to back jumpers from Sklavenitis gave SHU a 26 point lead at 64-38 with nine minutes to play. Salem scored the next nine points before the Griffins responded with a 7-0 run that ended with a Meis three with 1:49 to play.
Curtis and Meis each had 16 points to lead the Griffins. Sklavenitis added 14 points and Ortiz tossed in 12.
The Griffins will play Frostburg tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM.
