Seton Hill continued non conference play on Saturday afternoon as they hosted Virginia State in an important early season Atlantic Region battle.
The Griffins trailed by as many as 13 points in the second quarter but outscored the Trojans 45-30 over the final two quarters for a 73-61 victory. SHU improves to 8-0 on the season. The Trojans fall to 5-2 overall.
Seton Hill got off to a very slow start as they trailed 11-1 midway through the opening quarter. A layup from
Helene Cowan and a three from
Christiane Frye cut the lead to 11-6 with 3:39 left. Virginia State led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Trojans hit a three as they opened the second quarter scoring. A three pointer from
Hallie Cowan and a basket from
Mia Kalich trimmed the lead to 18-12 less than a minute into the quarter. Virginia State took their largest lead of the game at 27-14 with 4:45 to play in the second quarter. The Griffins used a quick 7-0 run over a little more than a minute on the clock to cut the lead to six. The Trojans led 31-24 with 1:30 to play in the half. SHU then scored the final four points of the half to trim the lead to 31-28 at the halftime break.
Virginia State pushed their lead back to seven early in the third quarter. The Griffins battled back and tied the score at 43 on a three pointer from
Helene Cowan with 3:12 left in the third. Two free throws from
Sakeria Haralson and two more from
Shaye Bailey pushed the Griffins lead to 47-43 with a minute left. The Griffins led 49-45 at the end of the third quarter.
Helene Cowan hit a three to open the scoring in the fourth quarter as the Griffins extended their lead to seven. Virginia State answered back and tied the game at 54 with 7:18 to play. Two free throws each from Frye and Bailey and an
Helene Cowan free throw gave SHU a 60-54 lead midway through the quarter. Back to back layups from Bailey and Kalich put the Griffins in front 64-56 with four minutes left. SHU then went on a 7-1 run to put the game away as they led 71-57 with 1:34 left.
Frye led the Griffins with 20 points. She added nine rebounds.
Helene Cowan added 16 points.
Mia Kalich had a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Hallie Cowan added nine points and Bailey finished with eight.
SHU will head east next weekend for a set of PSAC Crossovers. SHU will travel to Millersville and Kutzown.
