Women's Basketball Opens PSAC Play with Victory

The Griffin women's basketball team began PSAC play with a home matchup with Shepherd on Friday afternoon in the McKenna Center.

SHU blew open an 11 point halftime lead with a 31-11 third quarter as they cruised to an 86-52 victory over the Rams.  Seton Hill improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC while Shepherd falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC.  

A three point play from Christiane Frye gave SHU an early 7-2 advantage less than three minutes into the contest.  Shepherd tied the game at seven with 6:12 to play but the Griffins responded with a 12-0 run as they took a 19-7 lead three minutes to play in the quarter.  Abby Mankins hit two threes during the run while Frye added four points.  The Griffins led 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.  

Four straight points from Mankins and two more from Frye pushed the Griffin advantage to 31-17 with 6:36 left in the half.  The lead remained between seven and eleven points the rest of the half as SHU led 41-30 at the halftime break.

The third quarter was all Seton Hill as they outscored the Rams 31-11.  SHU used a 9-0 run in just over 1:30 to extend their lead to 54-34 midway through the quarter.  Over the final 3:45 of the quarter, the Griffins outscored the Rams 15-2 as the took a 72-41 lead into the fourth quarter.  

The lead remained in the thirties the entire fourth quarter with the Griffins pushing the lead to as many as 38 points.  

Frye led the Griffins with a game high 22 points.  Mankins and Helene Cowan each scored 14 points.  Mia Kalich was the fourth Griffin in double figures with 12 points.

SHU will continue PSAC play on Saturday when they host Shippensburg.
