Rally Comes Up Short at Edinboro

The Griffins made the trip north to Edinboro for a PSAC West matchup with the Fighting Scots on Saturday afternoon.  

Seton Hill got a late score but could not convert the two point play as they dropped a 24-22 decision to the Fighting Scots.  SHU is now 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the west while Edinboro is 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the west.  

SHU got on the board first on their third drive of the game late in the first quarter.  On the second play of the drive, Jake Cruz hit Todd Phillips with a 79 yard touchdown pass to put the Griffins in front 7-0 with 1:09 left in the quarter.  

Late in the second quarter, the Scots used a 13 play, 85 yard drive to tie the score at seven with 2:51 to play in the half.  After a quick three and out for the Griffins, Edinboro used a short field to take the lead right before the halftime break.  The Scots scored on an 18 yard TD pass with 47 seconds left in the half.  

The Griffins tied the game on their first drive of the second half.  On the second play of the drive, Cruz hit Cody Rubrecht with a 63 yard touchdown pass to tie the score at 14 with 14:18 left in the third quarter.  Midway thru the quarter, the Scots retook the lead on a one yard touchdown run.  With 2:31 left in the quarter, the Griffins cut the lead to 21-16 with a safety.  

Edinboro extended their lead to 24-16 on a 32 yard field goal with 8:09 left in the fourth quarter.  The Griffins cut the lead to 24-22 on a 13 yard TD pass from Cruz to Rubrecht with 1:16 to play.  The two point conversion attempt failed and the Griffins could not recover the onside kick.

Cruz threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns.  Phillips added four catches for 159 yards and a touchdown.  Rubrecht had four catches for 101 and two touchdowns.  D'Kairi Boone had 10 tackles to lead the Griffins.  David Awuah added nine.

The Griffins conclude PSAC West play next Saturday at Slippery Rock.
