Seton Hill continued their road trip to open the season as they made the trip to Frostburg, MD for a non conference matchup with Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins used a nine point advantage in the second quarter as they defeated the Bobcats by the score of 86-81. SHU is now 4-0 on the season.
SHU got off to a quick start as they scored the first nine points of the contest. Four different Griffins scored in the 9-0 run.
Hallie Cowan hit a three to cap the run at the 7:53 mark. Frostburg answered back with a 10-2 run as they trailed 11-10 midway through the quarter.
Christiane Frye gave SHU an 18-14 lead with 3:02 to play in the quarter. The Bobcats closed the quarter on a 10-3 run to take a 24-21 lead after one quarter.
After a Frostburg basket to open the second quarter, the Griffins went on a 10-3 run to take a 29-26 lead with 6:21 to play. With the score tied at 29, the Griffins got a layup from Frye, a tipin from
Mia Kalich and a three from
Helene Cowan to take a 36-29 lead with four minutes to play. A three pointer from
Abby Mankins extended the Griffins lead to 44-33 with 2:35 to play. The Griffins led 46-40 at the half.
Two baskets from Kalich and a three from
Helene Cowan pushed the lead to 53-42 with 8:18 to play. Frostburg cut the lead to three before a Kalich bucket and a
Hallie Cowan three pushed the lead to 65-57 with 1:40 to play. The Griffins led 67-62 at the end of the third quarter.
Frostburg opened the scoring in the fourth but Frye scored and
Helene Cowan drained another three to give SHU a 72-64 lead with 8:29 to play. Another Helene three pointer extended the lead to nine with over seven minutes to play. Frostburg cut the lead to two midway through the quarter. SHU pushed the lead to seven with 2:39 to play but the Bobcats trimmed the lead back to three at 81-78 with 1:28 to play. The Griffins hit five of six free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Helene Cowan led the Griffins with 30 points. Frye finished with 21 points. Kalich added 16. Mankins just missed double figures with nine.
The Griffins will begin PSAC play on Friday with a crossover matchup with Shepherd.
