Griffins Earn Homecoming Victory

Seton Hill hosted Clarion on Homecoming on the Hill on Saturday afternoon at Offutt Field in front of 1,250 fans.

The Griffins scored 17 fourth quarter points as they rallied for a 31-16 victory over the Golden Eagles.  SHU is now 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the west.

Seton Hill stopped Clarion on fourth and one on their first drive of the game and that led to the first scoring drive for the Griffins.  SHU marched 79 yards on 10 plays, the final two yards coming from Ky'Ron Craggette to give SHU a 7-0 lead with 8:07 left in the first quarter.  Richard Johnson then forced a fumble on the kickoff and Darius Patterson recovered the ball at the Clarion 28 yard line.  That drive was short lived after a very controversial fumble call on the Griffins turned the ball back over to the Eagles.  Clarion then went 50 yards in four plays to tie the score at seven with 5:19 to play.  SHU and Clarion were tied at seven after one period of play.

The only scoring in the second quarter was a pair of field goals from Clarion that gave the Golden Eagles a 13-7 lead at the halftime break.

The Griffins got the second half kickoff and did not take long to score.  On the second play of the drive, Jake Cruz hit Todd Phillips with an 80 yard catch and run touchdown.  Phillips leaped over his defender and stole the ball from him for the touchdown.  SHU led 14-13 with 14:03 left in the quarter.  Clarion answered with a 74 yard drive that resulted in a 31 yard field goal that put the Golden Eagles in front 16-14 with 8:42 left in the third quarter.  Clarion carried that lead into the fourth quarter.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Griffins took the lead for good.  Craggette rushed for 62 yards on the drive, the final one a four yard touchdown run which gave SHU a 21-16 lead.  Jordan Dorman then intercepted a pass and returned it to the Clarion 25 yard line which set up a 20 yard field goal from Ben Zavatchan that extended the lead to 24-16 with 4:22 to play.  SHU then put the game away on their final drive.  The big play on the drive was a 63 yard bomb from Cruz to Phillips.  Craggette capped off the drive with a 14 yard touchdown run with 1:47 to play.

The game featured a ton of offense.  Seton Hill finished with 546 yards of total offense including 221 yards on the ground.  Clarion finished with 445 yards and 200 yards rushing.

Cruz threw for 302 yards and a touchdown.  Craggette ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns.  He also went over the 1,000 yard mark for the season in the contest.  Phillips had four catches for 247 yards and a touchdown.

Ritchie McCormack led the defense with 12 tackles.  D'Kairi Boone added 10 tackles.

Seton Hill will continue PSAC West play next weekend at Edinboro.
