Griffins Pull Away in Second Half in PSAC West Victory

Seton Hill continued a three game in five day stretch with a PSAC West contest at home against Pitt Johnstown on Monday evening in the McKenna Center.   
 
Seton Hill pulled away in the second half as they broke a halftime tie with a 79-67 victory over the Mountain Cats.  SHU is now 11-8 overall and 8-5 in the PSAC while UPJ drops to 12-8 overall and 7-7 in the PSAC. 
 
Pitt Johnstown jumped out to a 13-6 lead over the Griffins midway through the first quarter.  They continued to hold a seven point lead as UPJ led 19-12 with 2:16 to play in the quarter.  The Griffins scored eight of the ten final points of the quarter as they cut the UPJ lead to 21-20 at the end of the quarter.  Mia Kalich had four of the eight points during the Griffin run. 
 
Christiane Frye gave the Griffins a one point lead with the opening basket of the second quarter.  UPJ hit back to back three pointers to take a 27-24 lead.  The Griffins answered back with a 7-0 run to take a 31-27 lead with 6:02 to play in the half.  UPJ responded with a 9-2 run to take a 36-33 lead with 1:46 to play.  Hallie Cowan hit a three late in the quarter to tie the contest at 36 at the half. 
 
The Griffins opened the second half scoring the first eleven points to take a 47-36 lead just over two minutes into the quarter.  Corinne Eisner scored six of the eleven points during the run.  UPJ pulled to within six at the end of the quarter as they trailed 59-53. 
 
The Mountain Cats cut the Griffin lead to three at 61-58 with 7:15 to play.  Helene Cowan pushed the lead back to six with a three pointer.  Kalich followed with a basket and Frye hit one of two free throws as SHU took a 67-58 lead midway through the quarter.  UPJ cut the lead to six but the Griffins hit eight of ten free throws to close out the win. 
 
Frye led the Griffins with 19 points.  Helene Cowan was second in scoring with 16 points.  Abby Mankins posted a double double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Hallie Cowan just missed double figures with nine points.  Kalich added eight points and nine rebounds. 
 
The Griffins will continue PSAC West action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Gannon.
