Seton Hill concluded their two game homestand as they hosted Indiana (PA) on Wednesday evening in the McKenna Center.
IUP took advantage of a 40-11 free throw attempt margin as they defeated the Griffins 75-66 in PSAC action. IUP made 27 of their 40 free throws while the Griffins hit 10 of their only 11 free throw attempts. SHU falls to 9-8 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC while IUP improves to 12-4 overall and 8-3 in the PSAC.
Three pointers from the Cowan sisters, Helene and Hallie gave SHU an early 6-5 lead just over two minutes into the contest. A layup from
Abby Mankins extended the SHU lead to 12-9 midway through the quarter. Late in the quarter, the Griffins went on a 7-0 run as they built a 19-15 lead with 1:10 to play. IUP hit the final bucket of the quarter and SHU led 19-16.
A three point play from
Sakeria Haralson pushed the SHU lead to 22-16 to start the second quarter scoring. Over the next four minutes, the Crimson Hawks would outscore the Griffins 17-0 as they took a 33-22 lead with 5:32 to play before the half. The Griffins responded with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 32-31 on a
Paula Llovich jumper with 1:52 to play.
Christiane Frye scored the first five points of the run. IUP took a 38-35 lead into the halftime break.
Each time the Griffins would make a mini run, IUP would answer right back to remain in the lead until Mankins hit a three pointer at the 4:44 mark of the third to tie the game at 45. IUP answered with a 9-0 run as they built a 54-45 lead with 1:37 left. A basket from
Helene Cowan and five straight from Frye cut the lead to 54-52 with seven seconds left. Two IUP free throws with one second to play gave the Crimson Hawks a 56-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
IUP built their lead back to ten points, 64-54 at the six minute mark of the final quarter. SHU cut the lead to seven on a
Hallie Cowan three pointer but IUP scored their final eleven points of the game at the free throw line as they shot fourteen over the final five minutes to close out the contest.
Frye led the Griffins with 20 points.
Hallie Cowan scored 13 and
Helene Cowan added 12.
The Griffins will continue PSAC West action next Saturday afternoon when they travel to Edinboro.
