Seton Hill returned home to host Mercyhurst in a PSAC West contest on Saturday afternoon in the McKenna Center.
Mercyhurst hit a three pointer at the buzzer to stun the Griffins and leave Greensburg with a 68-66 victory over the Griffins. SHU drops to 10-6 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC while the Lakers improve to 9-9 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC.
The Griffins took a quick 7-3 lead just over two minutes into the half.
Ryan Meis opened the scoring with a three and
Drew Green and
Caleb Whitaker followed with baskets to give SHU the early lead. Mercyhurst then went on an 8-0 run as they took a 13-9 lead with 14:40 to play in the first half. The Lakers built their lead to 17-12. Back to back three pointers from
Jimmy Moon and Green put the Griffins back in front 18-17 midway through the half.
Over the next two minutes the Lakers went on another 8-0 run to take a 25-18 lead. A Moon three pointer and a Green three point play gave SHU the lead back at 30-29 with 4:52 left in the half. Meis and
James Rice hit three pointers in the final minute of the half as SHU took a 36-35 lead into the halftime break.
Meis hit back to back three pointers to open the scoring for the Griffins early in the second half as they took a 42-40 lead. Over the next eight minutes, the teams exchanged the lead four times with the game being tied three times. Another Meis three and a three point play from
Kedrick Curtis put the Griffins in front 53-49 with 9:50 to play.
Meis drilled another three and Whitaker hit one of two free throws as the Griffins built the lead to six, 57-51, with 7:15 to play. Back to back driving layups from Dimitrios Sklavenitits gave SHU a 64-59 lead with 3:45 remaining. The Lakers scored the next four points to cut the SHU lead to 64-63 with 1:10 to play. The Griffins had a shot clock violation on their next possession with Mercyhurst hitting a jumper with 12 seconds to play to take a 65-64 lead. Meis followed with a jumper from the left side to give SHU a 66-65 lead with 5 seconds left. The Griffins had a foul to give and used it with 2.1 seconds left. The Lakers inbounded from in front of their basket and found a player in the corner who hit a three pointer at the buzzer for the 68-66 victory.
Meis led all scorers in the contest with 22 points. Green finished with 11 points and Moon also reached double figures with 10 points.
The Griffins will host IUP on Wednesday evening in another PSAC West battle.
