Seton Hill hit the road for the first time in PSAC West play as they made the short trip to California, PA for a matchup with the Vulcans.
California scored the final eight points of the contest as they defeated the Griffins 61-53. SHU is now 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC.
After CalU took an early 4-0 lead the Griffins answered with a three pointer from
Hallie Cowan and a layup from
Helene Cowan to take a 5-4 lead with 5:37 left in the quarter. CalU answered with a 10-0 run as they took a 14-5 lead with 2:38 to play. CalU led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Back to back layups from
Sakeria Haralson and
Helene Cowan cut the lead to 23-11 with nine minutes left in the second quarter. Two free throws from
Helene Cowan trimmed the lead to twelve at the 7:34 mark. Two layups from
Mia Kalich and one from
Hallie Cowan cut the Vulcan lead to 25-19 with six minutes left before the half. Two free throws from
Abby Mankins cut the Vulcans lead to 31-25 at the half.
An early basket in the second half from Corrine Eisner cut the Vulcans lead to just four points. A three from
Helene Cowan and a basket from
Christiane Frye trimmed the lead to 35-32 with six minutes left in the quarter. SHU took a 38-37 lead with 2:54 left in the quarter on a quick 6-0 run on baskets from
Helene Cowan, Haralson and Kalich. A Kalich free throw extended the lead to two. Cal took a 43-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
Frye tied the score at 43 with the opening basket of the fourth quarter. The Vulcans built their lead to 51-45 midway through the quarter.
Hallie Cowan and Llovich trimmed the lead to two with back to back buckets. With Cal leading by four, Llovich and
Hallie Cowan scored back to back buckets to tie the score at 53 with 2:50 to play. CalU scored the final eight points of the contest.
Hallie Cowan led the Griffins with 13 points.
Helene Cowan also reached double figures with 11 points.
The Griffins will continue PSAC West action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Clarion.
