Griffins Sweep Mercyhurst to Wrap Up Regular Season

Seton Hill closed down their four game set against Mercyhurst with a PSAC West doubleheader against the Lakers in Greensburg on Friday afternoon.

The Griffins scored six times in the first two innings behind the bat of Jack Oberdorf as they defeated Mercyhurst 6-3 in game one of the doubleheader.  SHU completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in game two.  SHU is now 40-10 overall and 30-2 in the PSAC West.

Mercyhurst scored a single run in the top of the first but the Griffins responded with two in their half of the inning.  Vincenzo Rauso walked with one out and Oberdorf followed with a two run shot to left on an 0-2 pitch to put the Griffins in front.

The Lakers added another run in the second but SHU responded with four runs in their half.  After one out, Max Mandler singled.  Noah Sweeney doubled to put runners on second and third.  Jack Whalen drew a two out walk to load the bases and Oberdorf hit his second homer of the game, this one a grand slam on the first pitch he saw.

Oberdrof went 2-2 with two homers and six RBI.  Mandler and Sweeney each had two hits.  Aidan Layton went 4.1 innings to earn the win.  He struck out four.

SHU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two.  Jack Whalen walked, stole second and moved to third on an error.  He scored on Rauso's RBI groundout that gave SHU a 1-0 lead.

Mercyhurst tied the game at one in the second when they scored on a wild pitch.  SHU retook the lead in the second.  With two outs, Sweeney walked and Whalen followed with a two run shot to left center that gave SHU a 3-1 lead.

Owen Sabol's RBI double extended the Griffins lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning.  The Lakers got that run back in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2.

Oberdorf went 3-3 in the win.  Logan Vietmeier added two hits.  Michael Marinchak earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.  Blake Barker pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.

The Griffins will begin play at the PSAC Championships in Slippery Rock on Wednesday afternoon against the fourth seed from the east.
