Oberdorf Powers Griffins to PSAC Tourney Win

Seton Hill opened play at the PSAC Tournament with a first round matchup with the fourth seed from the east Shippensburg at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon.

The Griffins jumped on the Raiders early and often as they defeated Shippensburg 12-1 in seven innings in the first round of the PSAC Tournament.  SHU is now 41-10 on the season.

The Griffins jumped on Shippensburg in the bottom of the first inning.  Jack Whalen was hit by a pitch to start the inning.  Jack Oberdorf singled to move Whalen to second.  Whalen stole third before Logan Vietmeier and Owen Sabol walked to load the bases.  Max Mandler singled thru the right side to score Whalen and give SHU a 1-0 lead.  Joe Fiedor drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 2-0.

SHU added two more runs in the second inning.  With one out, Whalen drew a walk and moved to second on an errant pick off throw.  Whalen then stole third.  Vincenzo Rauso drew a walk to put runners on first and third.  Oberdorf singled thru the left side to give SHU a 3-0 lead.  Later in the inning, Sabol dropped down a bunt base hit with two outs to score Rauso and give SHU a 4-0 lead.

Shippensburg cut the Griffins lead to 4-1 with a run in the top of the fourth inning.  The Griffins got that run and more back in the bottom half of the inning.  With two outs, Oberdorf launched one to left center for a solo shot.  Vietmeier doubled and scored when Sabol singled.  Mandler doubled to score Sabol and give SHU a 7-1 lead.

In the seventh, Whalen drew a one out walk.  Rauso singled with Whalen moving to third.  Rauso went to second as the throw went to third to get Whalen and when Ship threw to second, Whalen scored to make it 10-1.  Oberdorf then hit his second homer of the day, this one to walk off the Raiders, as SHU brought out the 10 run rule, to eliminate the Raiders.

Oberdorf led SHU with a 5-5 performance with two homers and three RBI.  Mandler, Sabol and Vietmeier each added two hits.  Sabol and Mandler drove in two.  Fiedor added three RBIs.  Jon McCullough went the distance, giving up one runs on two hits while striking out four.
