With their season on the line and needing a pair of wins to advance to the NCAA Atlantic Super Regionals, the Griffins hosted Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Atlantic Regional II in Greensburg, PA.
The Griffins got a dominating pitching performance from
Andino Vecchiolla to win game one 4-0 and force a deciding winner take all game. Seton Hill jumped all over the Lakers in the winner take all game, scoring eleven times in the first three innings as they eliminated the Lakers with a 12-5 win in game two. SHU improves to 48-11 overall and advances to their first ever NCAA Atlantic Super Regional in school history. Â
The 48 wins for the Griffins set a new school record for wins, besting the mark of 46 in 2012.
The Griffins took advantage of a leadoff walk to
Jack Whalen in the top of the first inning of game one. He stole second and moved to third on an infield single from
Vincenzo Rauso. Whalen scored on a sacrifice fly from
Jack Oberdorf that gave SHU a 1-0 lead. Â
SHU added another run after two outs in the fourth.Â
Max Mandler doubled and scored on a
Braden Durham single as SHU pushed their lead to 2-0. The Griffins scored two more times in the fifth with some great baserunning.Â
Joe Fiedor drew a leadoff walk. He moved to second on a Whalen single. After a lineout, Oberdorf singled to load the bases.Â
Logan Vietmeier reached on a fielders choice with both Fiedor and Whalen scoring on the play as SHU built a 4-0 lead. Â
The Lakers threatened in the sixth but were denied with some great defense and pitching. With runners on second and third and no one out, Mandler made a diving play in right for the first out. Vecchiolla then got a strikeout and fly out to end the inning and strand the runners. In the seventh, Vecchiolla issued a one out walk but got a double play to end the inning. Â
Vecchiolla was nearly flawless in the win, going eight innings, not allowing a run on just five hits while striking out six.Â
Blake Barker pitched a scoreless ninth. Seven different Griffins each had a hit in the win. Vietmeier drove in two. Â
The Griffins wasted no time jumping on the Lakers in game two by scoring five times in the bottom of the first. Whalen led off with a double down the left field line. Rauso walked and after a fly out, both runners moved up on wild pitches. Vietmeier singled to score Whalen.Â
Owen Sabol then executed a squeeze play with Rauso beating the play at the plate as SHU took a 2-0 lead. Mandler followed by hitting the first pitch he saw over the tall wall in left field to put the Griffins in front 5-0. Â
SHU continued to add on in the second inning as they scored two more times. Whalen drew a one out walk and stole second. Oberdorf walked to put two runners on. Vietmeier and Sabol had back to back RBI singles to increase the Griffins lead to 7-0. Â
Mercyhurst scored a single run in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 7-1. Seton Hill responded with four runs in their half of the third. Durham drew a leadoff walk. He moved to second on a Fiedor sacrifice bunt.Â
Noah Sweeney doubled to left center field to knock in Durham and push the SHU advantage back to seven. Rauso singled up the middle to score Sweeney. Oberdorf and Vietmeier drew walks to load the bases. Sabol followed with a two RBI single as the Griffins built an 11-1 lead. Â
Rauso doubled to score Sweeney, who walked, to extend the Griffins lead to 12-1 in the fourth. Â
The Lakers scored a single run in the fifth and added another single run in the eighth with two runs in the ninth but it was not nearly enough. Â
Rauso led the Griffins with three hits. He drove in two. Vietmeier, Sabol, Mandler and Sweeney each added two hits. Sabol drove in four, Mandler drove in three and Vietmeier added two RBIs. Â
Seton Hill will take on top seed in the Atlantic, Millersville, in the best of three Atlantic Super Regional. Game one will be at 1 PM on Friday. Game two is set for 11 AM on Saturday.Â
