SHU Sweeps Four Game Set from UPJ, Runs Winning Streak to 13

Seton Hill concluded their four game set with Pitt Johnstown with a doubleheader at Point Stadium in Johnstown on Monday afternoon.

Aidan Layton threw a three hitter as the Griffins defeated UPJ 6-2 in game one.  The Griffins scored early and often in game two as they completed the sweep of UPJ with a 9-4 win in game two.  SHU is now 20-7 overall and 8-0 in the PSAC West.  The Griffins have now won 13 in a row.

SHU finally took advantage of a leadoff free pass in the fifth.  Logan Vietmeier drew a five pitch walk and Braden Durham hammered the first pitch he saw over the left center field to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.  The Griffins added another run in the inning.  Owen Sabol singled, moved to third on two ground outs and scored on a two out hit from Jack Whalen on a 3-2 pitch.

UPJ strung together three hits in the sixth inning, their first three hits of the contest as they scored twice to cut the Griffins lead to 3-2.

The Griffins scored three time in the top of the seventh inning to answer the Mountain Cat runs.  With one out, Whalen walked.  He later scored on a Max Mandler single.  Vietmeier singled and two runs scored on a Durham single to right center which increased the SHU lead to 6-2.

Layton went the distance, giving up just three hits with three strikeouts.  He needed just 64 pitches in the win.  Durham went 2-4 with four RBI, including the homer.

The Griffins scored twice in the top of the first inning of game two.  Whalen singled on the first pitch of the game.  He moved to second on a ground out and stole third before scoring on a wild pitch.  Jack Oberdorf walked, moved to second on an error and scored when Durham lined a double past the third baseman.

The Mountain Cats tied the score at two in the bottom half of the inning with a two out single and a homer to left center field.

SHU retook the lead in the top of the second inning.  Noah Sweeney was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  He stole second and scored when Jared Dowey doubled down the left field line.  Joe Fiedor and Oberdorf walked to load the bases and Mandler was hit by a pitch to force in a run and give SHU a 4-2 lead.

UPJ answered right back with two runs of their own as they tied the score at four after two innings.

The Griffins retook the lead in the top of the fourth.  Fiedor led off the inning with a single.  He stole second.  After an out, Vincenzo Rauso drew a walk.  Both he and Fiedor stole to put runners on second and third with one out.  Oberdorf followed with a single off the wall in left to score Fiedor.  Mandler doubled off the top of the high wall in left center to score Rauso and give SHU a 6-4 lead.  Durham then beat a drawn in infield to drive in two and extend the SHU lead to 8-4.

Seton Hill picked up another run in the sixth.  Oberdorf tripled off the center field wall with one out and scored when Mandler singled off the wall in left as SHU took a 9-4 lead.

Oberdorf, Mandler, Durham and Dowey each had two hits for SHU.  Mandler and Durham each drove in three.  Brandon Bergert earned the win.  He went five innings, striking out five.  Andino Vecchiolla threw two scoreless innings in relief.

The Griffins continue PSAC West play with a home doubleheader against Indiana (PA) on Friday afternoon.
