Softball Splits a Pair at California

The Griffin softball team made the short trip to California, PA for a PSAC West doubleheader at California on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.

The Vulcans pulled away for a 12-4, six inning win in game one of the doubleheader.  SHU bounced back with a 3-1 win in game two of the doubleheader to split the pair of games.  SHU is now 26-14 overall and 19-7 in the west.

Seton Hill took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  With one out, Nina Grandey doubled to the right center field gap.  She moved to third on a ground out and scored when Lauren Dellett single through the middle.

The Vulcans tied the game at one with two hits in the bottom half of the first inning.  SHU got that run back in the top of the second.  Mackenzie Zang led off the inning with a double to left center field.  She scored on a double by Abby Smearman as the Griffins took a 2-1 lead.

SHU added another run in the third.  Grace Paredes doubled to lead off the inning.  Pinch runner Morgan Hershberger scored when Mackenzie Zang tripled down the left field line.

Cal tied the score at three with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.  SHU took the lead back in the fourth.  Bre Athey drew a one out walk.  She stole second and scored when Grandey doubled off the left center field wall.

The Vulcans scored three times in the fifth and six times in the sixth for the win over the Griffins.

Grandey, Paredes, Dellett and Zang each had two hits.  Grandey had a pair of doubles and Zang doubled and tripled.

In game two, Grandey singled with one out and scored on a Dellett double as SHU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Cal tied the score at one in the bottom of the first.

SHU retook the lead in the second.  With two outs, Brooklyn Fukushima singled and scored on a Athey triple as SHU took a 2-1 lead.

In the sixth, Paredes drew a leadoff walk.  Pinch runner Alexis Bonatch pinch ran and moved to second on a groundout.  Bonatch scored when Zang singled through the middle to give SHU a 3-1 lead.

Chloe Elliott was spectacular in the circle with a complete game two hitter.  She struck out three and allowed just a single run in the first.  Chloe did not allow a hit after the first inning, only allowing a hit batter in the fifth and a walk in the seventh.  Athey had two hits, including a triple to lead SHU.

SHU will continue PSAC West play on Friday with a home doubleheader with Slippery Rock.
