The Seton Hill softball team made the trip to Johnstown, PA for a PSAC West doubleheader with Pitt Johnstown on Thursday afternoon.
SHU scored in four of their final five at bats in a 9-4 win in game one. The Griffins completed the sweep of the Mountain Cats with a 12-6 win in game two. SHU is now 24-12 overall and 17-5 in PSAC West play. The Griffins have won ten straight.
Pitt Johnstown scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one to take a 2-0 lead.
The Griffins cut the lead in half in the third.
Bre Athey drew a leadoff walk and stole second. She moved to third on a
Nina Grandey single and scored on
Grace Paredes sacrifice fly to right field.
SHU retook the lead in the fourth. With one out,
Mackenzie Zang reached on an error and stole second.
Abby Smearman singled putting runners on first and third. Smearman stole second and both runners scored on
Kylie Hegland's double as SHU took a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth, Grandey doubled and scored when
Brooke Cleland lined a homer over the left center field wall to put the Griffins in front 5-2.
Lauren Dellett, Zang and Hegland followed with hits with Dellett scoring on Hegland's single as SHU built their lead to 6-2. SHU added three more runs in the sixth. Grandey picked up an RBI on a bunt single and Cleland singled to center to score two.
Dellett earned her 15th win of the season. She allowed just one earned run in the complete game effort. Grandey led SHU with three hits. Cleland, Dellett and Hegland each added two hits. Cleland drove in four and Hegland drove in three.
Pitt Johnstown took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the bottom of the first of game two. SHU responded with two runs in their half of the second. Hegland walked to lead off the inning. She scored when
Brooklyn Fukushima homered on a 1-2 pitch over the left center field wall to put the Griffins in front 2-1.
Seton Hill added another run in the third. Grandey singled with one out and stole second. She scored when Paredes doubled down the right field line as SHU took a 3-1 lead. UPJ scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at three.
The Griffins took advantage of some free passes and an error to score four times in the fourth. Grandey and Paredes walked to start the inning. Both moved up on a ground out. Hegland executed a perfect squeeze play, scoring both runners as the ball rolled into the outfield past the moving infield. Zang reached on a two base error before
Abby Smearman executed another good bunt to score Hegland and give SHU a 6-3 lead. Fukushima closed out the scoring with an RBI single to make it 7-3.
Seton Hill added four more runs in the sixth. The first run scored on a Paredes sacrifice fly. Zang singled in two runs and Fukushima closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Dellett added an RBI single in the seventh to close out the scoring for the Griffins.
Chloe Elliott earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Grandey, Paredes and Fukushima each had two hits. Fukushima drove in four in the win.
SHU is next scheduled to travel to Gannon for a PSAC West doubleheader on Sunday.
