The Griffin baseball team continued play on its spring trip with a matchup at #2 Tampa on Monday afternoon.
Â
Tampa was able to pull away from the Griffins in the late innings for a 12-5 win. SHU falls to 5-4 overall while the Spartans improve to 14-3.Â
Â
It did not take the Griffins long to crack the scoreboard as two of the first three Griffins reached base with doubles.Â
Jack Whalen doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a double from
Jack Oberdorf as SHU took the early 1-0 lead.Â
Â
The bottom of the first inning was not nearly as good for the Griffins as they failed to make any plays and committed two errors in route to five Spartan runs as they took a 5-1 lead over the Griffins.Â
Â
Braden Durham opened the second inning with a leadoff homer to cut the Tampa lead to 5-2. Later in the inning, Oberdorf perfectly placed a double between the shortstop and left fielder to drive in two and cut the Tampa lead to 5-4.Â
Aidan Shephard hit a bomb to left center field with one out in the fourth to tie the contest at five.
Â
Tampa retook the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Spartans put the game away with five runs in the seventh inning as they increased their lead to 12-5.Â
Â
Oberdorf and Whalen each led the Griffins with three hits, including two doubles. Â
Â
Seton Hill will be off on Tuesday before returning to action on Wednesday afternoon. Â
