The Griffin softball team opened their spring trip in the Spring Games with a pair of contests on Sunday at Legends Park in Clermont, Florida. They opened against a pair of Mountain East teams in WV Wesleyan and Notre Dame (OH).
Seton Hill and WV Wesleyan played scoreless softball for seven innings and the Bobcats took advantage of the international tiebreaker to earn a 1-0 win in game one. Notre Dame (OH) scored five runs in the first three innings as they defeated the Griffins 5-2. SHU is now 4-4 on the season.
Griffin starter
Lauren Dellett and Wesleyan starter Hannah Hudson hooked up in a pitchers dual like they did last weekend in Glenville. Seton Hill got two runners on in the second when
Mackenzie Zang singled with two outs and went to second when
Harlowe Nigh reached on a fielders choice but a flyout ended the threat. Seton Hill had a great chance to take the lead in the sixth inning when
Nina Grandey tripled to lead off the inning. She was then cutdown at the plate on a fielders choice.
In the eighth, the Griffins could not push across their runner from second but the Bobcats were able to. They used a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to walk off the Griffins.
Dellett was the hard luck loser. She only allowed three hits in the 7.2 innings and the one unearned run.
Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an inside the park homer. They added two more unearned runs in the second inning and followed that up with two more runs in the third as they took a 5-0 lead.
The Griffins got one run back in the fifth on a solo homer from
Grace Paredes to lead off the inning. SHU used a little small ball in the sixth inning.
Alexis Bonatch led off with a bunt single. Grandey followed with another bunt single with Bonatch moving to third and Grandey to second on the play. After a ground out, Zang singled to drive in Bonatch and make it 5-2. The Falcons then got two pop ups to end the inning.
Nigh pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. She only allowed two hits while striking out two.
The Griffins will be off on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday against Ashland and Grand Valley State.
