The Griffins closed out their four game set with California (PA) with a doubleheader at Wild Things Park in Washington, PA.
Game one was a special one for the Griffins as it was the 1,000 game in the history of the program. The Griffins jumped on CalU in the first inning as they won game one by a 13-6 score. SHU completed the four game sweep with a 4-0 win in game two. SHU is now 15-7 overall and 4-0 in the west. The Griffins have won eight in a row.
The Griffins jumped on the Vulcans in the top of the first inning of game one. SHU batted around and scored five times. With one out,
Max Mandler singled.
Vincenzo Rauso and
Jack Oberdorf drew walks to load the bases.
Owen Sabol followed by hammering a 1-2 slider over the left field wall to give the Griffins a 4-0 lead.
Braden Durham singled, stole second and scored on a
Logan Vietmeier double as SHU took a 5-0 lead.
SHU added another run in the second inning.
Jack Whalen led off the inning with a single. After a fly out, Rauso and Oberdorf walked to load the bases. Whalen scored on a sacrifice fly from Sabol to make it 6-0.
Noah Sweeney singled in Durham in the third and Vietmeier singled in Rauso in the fourth as the Griffins took an 8-0 lead.
Seton Hill added two more in the fifth. Whalen singled and Mandler and Rauso walked to load the bases. Sabol knocked in two more with a double to left center that gave the Griffins a 10-0 lead.
California scored six times in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Griffins lead to 10-6.
The Griffins responded with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Vietmeier led off the inning with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sweeney.
Cameron Colwell was hit by a pitch. After a flyout,
Aidan Shephard drew a walk to load the bases. Rauso knocked in two with a single to give SHU a 12-6 lead.
Sabol with the big day at the plate. He went 4-5 with two doubles, a grand slam and 7 RBIs. Whalen and Vietmeier each added three hits. Rauso and Durham finished with two. Vietmeier, Rauso and Sweeney each drove in two.
Caiden Wood threw two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out three.
The Griffins got on board first in the third inning of game two. Sweeney and Whalen singled to put runners on first and third with no one out. Sweeney scored on a sacrifice fly from Mandler as SHU took a 1-0 lead.
SHU added another run in the fourth inning. Oberdorf led off with a double. He scored on a Vietmeier single as SHU took a 2-0 lead.
The Griffins added two more in the seventh. Pinch hitter
Drew Garth led off with a double. Whalen reached on an infield single. Mandler drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly and Whalen scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
Brandon Bergert earned the win, going six innings and giving up just five hits while striking out nine. Whalen had two hits and Mandler drove in two.
Blake Barker threw a scoreless seventh.
Seton Hill will take a break from PSAC West play as they host West Liberty in a non conference game on Tuesday afternoon.
