Seton Hill kicked off PSAC West play with a home doubleheader with California (PA) on Saturday afternoon in Greensburg.
The Griffins cruised to a 12-4 win in game one and then walked off the Vulcans in game two with a 6-5 win. SHU is now 13-7 overall and 2-0 in the west.
SHU got off to a fast start in game one, scoring six times in the bottom of the first inning.
Jack Whalen walked and scored on a
Max Mandler double. With two outs, Sabol walked.
Logan Vietmeier followed with an RBI single.
Braden Durham added an RBI single and
Aidan Shephard closed out the scoring with a three run homer to right.
The Griffins added another run in the second.
Max Mandler singled and moved to third on a
Vincenzo Rauso single. He scored on a wild pitch as SHU led 7-0. Shephard doubled and scored on an error in the third.
Cal scored three times in the top of the fourth to cut the SHU lead to 8-3. The Griffins got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Rauso drew a one out walk. He moved to third on a
Jack Oberdorf single. Rauso scored on a sac bunt from
Owen Sabol. Oberdorf scored when Vietmeier reached on an error as SHU built a 10-3 lead.
Durham added a two RBI single in the sixth.
Mandler, Rauso, Oberdorf, Durham and Shephard each had two hits.
Kevin Vaupel earned the win with a complete game. He struck out four.
California scored three times in the top of the first of game two.
The Griffins got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Whalen led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Oberdorf.
The Vulcans added another run in the second as they pushed their lead to 4-1.
SHU cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth. Whalen, Mandler and Rauso singled to load the bases with no one out. Whalen scored on an RBI groundout from Oberdorf.
Seton Hill tied the score in the sixth. Durham doubled to lead off the inning. With one out, pinch hitter
Drew Garth homered down the left field line to knot the score at four.
Blake Barker got out of a two on, one out jam in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts.
In the bottom half of the inning, Rauso singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Oberdorf. Sabol walked off the Vulcans with a single down the left field line.
Whalen, Mandler and Rauso each had two hits. Barker earned the win with a scoreless seventh.
SHU will conclude the four game set on Sunday in Washington, PA.
