Softball Opens PSAC West Play with Sweep

Seton Hill began PSAC West play on Tuesday afternoon with a road doubleheader at Clarion. 
 
The Griffins opened the doubleheader with a 9-2 win.  SHU completed the sweep with a 9-5 win in game two.  SHU is now 9-7 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West. 
 
SHU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Lauren Dellett opened the inning with a single.  Alexis Valencia pinch ran and stole second.  Camryn Murphy drew a walk to put runners on first and second.  Brooklyn Fukushima had a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up.  After an out, Abby Smearman singled to drive in Valencia and give SHU a 1-0 lead. 
 
The Griffins then scored five times in the third.  Nina Grandey doubled with one out.  Mackenzie Zang singled to put runners on first and third.  Grace Paredes followed with a double to score two.  She moved to third on a passed ball and scored when Murphy reached on an error.  Fukushima and Kylie Hegland followed with RBI hits to give SHU a 6-0 lead. 
 
Clarion picked up a run in the bottom of the third. 
 
The Griffins scored two more runs in the fifth.  Dellett reached on an error to start the inning and Murphy walked to put two runners on.  Fukushima doubled to score Dellett and Hegland singled to score Fukushima to push the SHU lead to 8-1.  Hegland doubled in Murphy in the seventh for the final run of the game. 
 
Dellett earned the win with a complete game.  She struck out 11.  Hegland had three hits and drove in three.  Zang, Paredes, Fukushima and Smearman each added two hits. 
 
SHU scored two times in the first inning of game two.  With one out, Zang singled with Paredes drawing a walk and Dellett singling to load the bases.  Murphy then doubled to drive in two. 
 
The Griffins added two more runs on back to back RBI singles from Grandey and Zang in the second inning. 
 
Seton Hill then scored five times in the third.  Fukushima drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Hegland triple.  Smearman followed with a single to make it 6-0.  Later in the inning, Paredes homered to center field to give SHU a 9-0 lead. 
 
Clarion scored two times in the third inning, once in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to cut the SHU lead to 9-5
 
Zang led the offense, going 4-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Grandey and Murphy each added two hits.  Paredes drove in three runs.  Chloe Elliott earned the win, she went four innings, giving up one earned run.    
 
The Griffins are scheduled to travel to West Liberty on Thursday.
