Seton Hill hosted Edinboro on Wednesday evening in an important PSAC West battle.
Junior guard
Christiane Frye scored a career high 39 points but it was not enough as the Griffins dropped a double overtime decision by the score of 101-99. SHU drops to 17-10 overall and 10-8 in the PSAC while the Scots improve to 15-7 overall and 12-5 in PSAC play.
Frye's 39 points tied a school record for NCAA play. Kelly Brennan also scored 39 points against Slippery Rock during the 2014-15 season.
The Griffins got off to a fast start in the contest, scoring the first five points of the contest and building an 11-2 lead less than six minutes into the contest.
Courtney Tomas had five and
Alie Seto added four in the first four minutes. Seto's first free throw put her over the 1,500 career point mark. Edinboro battled back to 20-14 but a
Sakeria Haralson free throw and
Helene Cowan's buzzer beater from midcourt put the Griffins in front 24-14 after one quarter.
Back to back layups from Frye extended the Griffins lead to 16 points, 33-17, less than three minutes into the second quarter. Edinboro got as close as eleven points in the quarter but Frye scored the final six points of the half as SHU led 46-32 at the halftime break.
The third quarter was big for Edinboro as they outscored the Griffins by a 29-17 margin. The Scots got to within eight but an old fashioned three point play from Frye pushed the lead back to 52-41 with 6:24 left. Edinboro continued to chip into the Griffin lead and tied the score at 56 with 1:27 to play. Late in the quarter
Emma Fischer hit a three to give SHU a three point lead but the Scots answered right back with a three of their own to tie it.
Hallie Cowan scored with three seconds left to give SHU a 63-61 lead.
Maddy Moore opened the fourth quarter by hitting back to back three pointers as SHU pushed their lead to 69-61 with 8:26 left. Edinboro then went on a 11-0 run to take a 72-69 lead with 4:53 left. Back to back layups from Seto put the Griffins back in front 73-72 with just over four minutes to play.
Helene Cowan's basket and Moore's three pointer extended the SHU lead to 78-74 with 2:48 to play. The Scots connected on three free throws, the final two with 21 seconds left to cut the lead to 78-77. Fischer hit one of two free throws ro push the lead to 79-77 with 19 seoonds left. Edinboro hit a jumper from the paint to tie the game at 79 and send it to overtime.
Edinboro took an early three point lead in the first overtime but a three point play from Frye evened the score at 82 with 3:16 left. Each team would only score one more basket and the game headed to a second overtime tied at 84.
A layup and a three pointer from Frye gave SHU an 89-86 lead early in the second overtime period. Moore extended the lead to 92-88 with a three pointer with 2:53 to play. The Scots answered with a 7-0 run to lead 95-92 with 1:54 to play. Back to back Frye baskets gave SHU a 96-95 lead with 1:10 left. The Scots answered with a three point play to retake the lead 98-96 with 1:02 to play. Fischer hit one of two free throws with 25 seconds to play. The Scots then hit two free throws before Frye made it 100-99 with 14 seconds to play. The Scots hit one of two free throws but the Griffins could not get one of four shots to fall and the game ended.
Frye finished with 39 points in 47 minutes of play on 15-26 shooting. She also added eight rebounds and five assists. Seto added 14 points and eight rebounds. Moore finished with 12 points and Tomas had a double double of 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Joi Burleigh also pulled down 11 rebounds.
SHU will travel to Pitt Johnstown on Saturday.
