Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Frye's Game Winner Gives Griffins 72-71 Win

Seton Hill continued PSAC West play on Monday evening as they traveled to Clarion looking to win their third straight.

Christiane Frye's basket with 10.7 seconds remaining gave the Griffins a 72-71 victory over the Golden Eagles.  SHU is now 17-9 overall and 10-7 in the PSAC.  The Griffins have now won three in a row.

A jumper from Hallie Cowan and two free throws from Sakeria Haralson put the Griffins in front 4-3 early in the first quarter.  Clarion answered with six straight as they took a 9-4 lead midway through the quarter.  Hallie Cowan then hit a three and Haralson added a basket as the Griffins tied the score at nine.  Clarion took a 16-11 lead before Frye's old fashioned three point play cut the lead to 16-14 at the end of the quarter.

The Golden Eagles scored the first four points of the second quarter before the Griffins went on a 10-0 run as they took a 24-20 lead with 6:36 to play.  Courtney Tomas added six of the ten points in the run.  Back to back three pointers from Tomas extended the lead to 32-25 with 3:05 to play before the half.  Clarion scored the final five points of the quarter as the Griffins led 34-33 at the half.

Clarion started off the second half on fire and took a 48-37 lead with 4:18 to play in the third quarter.  Six straight points from Helene Cowan late in the quarter cut the Golden Eagles lead to 53-50.

The early portion of the fourth quarter was filled with runs.  The Griffins used a 9-0 run to take a 61-56 lead 7:40 to play.  Four different Griffins scored in the run.  Clarion then answered with a 11-2 run as they took a 67-63 lead with just over three minutes to play.  SHU got a free throw from Frye and two from Seto as they trimmed the lead to 67-66 with 2:07 to play.  Frye answered a Clarion basket to cut the Clarion lead to 69-68 with 58 seconds left.  After two Clarion free throw misses Helene Cowan hit a jumper to put SHU in front 70-69 with 27 seconds left.  Clarion answered right back ten seconds later as they retook a 71-70 lead.  Frye's driving layup put SHU back in front by one with 10.7 seconds left and the Griffins got a defensive stop to close out the win.

Frye led the Griffins with a game high 22 points.  Helene Cowan added 16 points.  Tomas also reached double figures with 14 points.  Haralson added seven points and nine rebounds.
