Griffins Pick Up PSAC West Road Win at the Rock

Seton Hill made the trip north to Slippery Rock for a PSAC West road contest with the Rock on Saturday afternoon.

After trailing early in the first half, the Griffins used a 9-0 run to take a lead they would not give up, as they defeated the Rock by the score of 83-72.  SHU improves to 13-9 overall and 8-8 in the PSAC while the Rock falls to 14-8 overall and 8-8 in the PSAC.

A basket from Drew Green and a three from Jimmy Moon gave the Griffins an early 5-4 lead.  The Rock answered with a 5-0 run as they took a 9-5 lead over the Griffins.  With 14 minutes remaining in the half, the Rock led 15-10.  The Griffins then went on a 9-0 run as they took a 19-15 lead with 10:47 left in the half.  Four different Griffins scored during the run.

The Rock scored four straight to trim the lead to one before an old fashioned three point play from Caleb Whitaker and two free throws from Samuel Tabe pushed the lead back to 24-18 with 8:26 left in the half.  James Rice followed with a three pointer to extend the Griffins lead to 27-20 with 7:31 to play.  Back to back threes from Rice and Michael Joiner gave SHU a 41-30 lead with 48 seconds left.  SHU took a 41-32 lead into the halftime break.

Green drilled a three and Ryan Meis added a basket to start the half as SHU extended its lead to 46-32 with 18:17 left.  The Rock responded with a 9-2 run as they cut the Griffins lead to 48-41 with 16:20 to play.  Over the next six minutes, the Rock outscored the Griffins 14-8 as they cut the SHU lead to 56-55 midway through the half.

The Rock tied the score at 58 with just over nine minutes to play.  Over the next two minutes the teams exchanged baskets with the score tied at 64 with 7:10 to play.  Back to back baskets from Whitaker gave SHU a four point lead with 5:30 left.  Back to back threes from Sean Dillon and Moon plus a Green jumper extended the SHU lead to 76-66 with just over three minutes to play.  The Rock would get no closer than eight points the rest of the contest.

Dillon led the Griffins with 19 points.  Tabe posted a double double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Green, Whitaker and Gabe Gillespie each added nine points.

The Griffins will travel to Clarion on Monday for another PSAC West contest.
