The Griffin women's basketball team honored three seniors prior to their home PSAC West contest with Gannon on Saturday afternoon.
Gannon outscored the Griffins 23-17 in the final quarter as they rallied for an 84-80 victory over the Griffins. SHU falls to 17-13 overall and 10-11 in the PSAC.
The Golden Knights scored the first five points of the contest but the Griffins responded with two three pointers from
Hallie Cowan, a three pointer from
Courtney Tomas and two
Sakeria Haralson free throws as they tied the score at 11 midway through the quarter. Tomas added two more three pointers in the quarter as SHU took a 19-18 lead into the second quarter.
Gannon opened a six point lead midway through the second quarter. A layup from
Christiane Frye and a three point play from
Helene Cowan cut the Gannon lead to 36-35 with 3:50 to play. The Golden Knights took a 45-40 lead into the halftime break.
The Griffins opened the second half on a 10-1 run as they built a 50-46 lead.
Alie Seto's three pointer gave SHU a four point lead. Gannon battled back to take a 55-52 lead with 3:59 to play. SHU responded with three straight three pointers, two from Tomas and one from Frye as they led 61-57 with 2:28 left. SHU led 63-61 at the end of the third quarter.
Five straight points from Haralson put SHU in front 70-64 with 7:38 remaining. A Tomas layin extended the SHU lead to 72-67 with 6:42 to play. Gannon battled back to tie the score at 72 with 4:33 left. Each time Gannon took a lead down the stretch, the Griffins responded to tie the game. There were four ties after the 72-72 tie. Two Seto free throws tied the score at 80 with 1:20 left. Gannon scored on their next possession and forced a SHU turnover then hit two free throws for the four point win.
Tomas led the Griffins with a career high 23 points. Seto finished with 17 points.
Helene Cowan added 14 points and
Christiane Frye also reached double figures with 11. Haralson added 11 rebounds.
The Griffins will close out the regular season on Wednesday when they host Mercyhurst.
