Seton Hill began their 2023 season with a home doubleheader with Wheeling on Tuesday afternoon.
SHU opened the doubleheader with a 7-0 win in game one. The Griffins completed the sweep of the Cardinals with a 12-3, 5 inning win in game two.
The Griffins got on the board in the bottom of the first inning.
Alexis Valencia drew a leadoff walk and stole second. After
Lauren Dellett drew a one out walk, they stole second and third.
Grace Paredes singled thru the right side to drive in both Valencia and Dellett and give SHU a 1-0 lead.
Seton Hill added two more in the second inning.
Brooklyn Fukushima singled with one out. She moved to second when
Abby Smearman walked. Both stole second and scored when
Nina Grandey doubled to the left center field gap with two outs to give SHU a 4-0 lead.
SHU added three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Smearman singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Valencia. Later in the inning, Smearman scored when Dellett reached on an error. Paredes doubled down the left field line scoring pinch runner
Kylie Hegland. Paredes scored on a wild pitch to give SHU a 7-0 lead.
Paredes led the Griffins with four hits, including two doubles and drove in in three. Grandey also drove in two with a double. Dellett earmed the win in the circle with a complete game five hitter. She struck out nine in the win.
The Griffins scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the first of game two. Grandey led off the game with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She later scored on a throwing error. Fukushima reached on an error and Paredes walked. Hegland scored on a wild pitch while Fukushima and Paredes scored on a sacrifice fly from
Tristin Koerner as SHU took a 4-0 lead.
Wheeling scored three times in the top of the third inning as they cut the Griffins lead to 4-3.
Seton Hill got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs,
Maddy Taylor singled. She moved to second when
Kelleigh Pollock walked. Pinch hitter Smearman singled through the right side to score Taylor and give SHU a 5-3 lead.
The Griffins scored seven times in the fifth to end the game. Hegland led off the inning with a single. Fukushima reached on an error and moved to third while Hegland scored on the error. Fukushima scored on a sacrifice fly from Paredes to give SHU a 7-3 lead.
Mackenzie Zang followed with a single and
Chloe Elliott reached on an error to put runners on first and third. Taylor walked to load the bases. Pollock singled to make it 8-3 and then Smearman cleared the left field wall in a 1-2 pitch for a walk off grand slam that ended the contest.
Smearman finished 2-2 with five RBI in the win. Paredes, Koerner and Pollock each drove in runs. Elliott earned the win in the circle. She went the distance, giving up two earned runs while striking out two.
The Griffins will return to action on February 25-26 at the Glenville State Tournament.
