Griffins Celebrate Centennial With Big Win Over IUP

On a night where the Griffins celebrated the 100 year anniversary of basketball at Seton Hill, the Griffins made sure it would be a night to remember as they defeated the Crimson Hawks by the score of 65-50 in front of a packed house in the McKenna Center.  Seton Hill improved to 15-9 overall and 8-7 in the PSAC while IUP falls to 14-6 overall and 9-6 in the PSAC.

IUP got off to a fast start while the Griffins got off to a slow start as the Crimson Hawks took a 7-0 lead just over four minutes into the contest.  Over the next four minutes, it was the Christiane Frye show as she scored the first twelve points for the Griffins as SHU tied the score at 12 with 1:53 left in the quarter.  SHU got two free throws from Helene Cowan before a Frye basket late in the quarter gave SHU a 16-14 lead after one.

The Griffins opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run on a three pointer from Alie Seto and five straight points from Helene Cowan as they built a 24-14 lead less than three minutes into the quarter.  A three from Frye and a basket from Sakeria Haralson put SHU in front 29-19 midway through the quarter.  IUP answered with an 8-0 run before baskets from Frye and Helene Cowan gave SHU a 35-29 halftime lead.

Frye opened the second half by drilling a three to push the SHU advantage to nine.  IUP then scored eight straight to get back to within one at 38-37 with just over five minutes to play in the quarter.  Haralson ended the IUP run with back to back layups to push the SHU lead back to five.  Late in the quarter, IUP cut the SHU lead to one but a Maddy Moore three put SHU in front 45-41 with less than a minute to play.  SHU led 45-43 after three quarters of play.

Seto opened the fourth quarter with an old fashioned three point play to give SHU a five point lead.  Midway through the quarter, SHU only led IUP by one, 53-52 but a three from Courtney Tomas and another Haralson bucket extended the lead to 58-52 with 4:22 to play.  Five straight from IUP cut the lead to one but Haralson answered back with a basket and then a three point play to give SHU a 63-57 lead with 1:26 left.  Helene Cowan hit two free throws to close out the contest.

The Griffins held IUP to just 37% shooting from the floor and forced 15 IUP turnovers.

Frye led SHU with 22 points.  She also added five rebounds, four assists and two steals.  Haralson posted a double double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.  She also had five blocks.  Helene Cowan added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.  Seto added eight points and nine rebounds.

SHU will travel to Slippery Rock on Saturday.
