Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Run Gives Griffins Win over Mansfield

The Griffin men closed out the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule as they hosted Mansfield in a PSAC Crossover on Tuesday evening in the McKenna Center.

Ryan Meis hit two huge three pointers down the stretch and the Griffins outscored the Mountaineers 12-0 over the final five minutes for a 74-70 come from behind win for the Griffins.  SHU is now 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC while Mansfield falls to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC.

SHU took an early 5-0 lead over Mansfield two minutes into the contest on a three from Jimmy Moon and a driving layup from Dimitrios Sklavenitis.  Mansfield tied the score at 12 but SHU responded with a quick 6-0 run on baskets from Meis, Drew Green and Sklavenitis as SHU took a 18-12 lead with 12:05 left in the half.  Midway through the half, the Griffins led 22-17.

Mansfield built their lead up to as many as four points over the final ten minutes but a Green tip in with 3:42 to play put SHU in front 33-32.  Mansfield closed the half on a 9-3 run as they took a 41-36 lead into the halftime break.

Just two thirty into the second half, the Griffins tied the score at 43 on a Moon three pointer.  Over the next three minutes, the teams exchanged the lead six times.  Midway through the half, the Mountaineers led 59-56.

The Mountaineers built their lead to eight at 70-62 with 4:51 left.  Meis trimmed the lead back to five with a three pointer at the 4:37 mark.  Green hit two free throws at the 2:11 mark and Caleb Whitaker hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to 70-68 with with 1:48 left.  The Griffin defense forced a miss and Sklavenitis found Meis in the corner and Meis drilled a three to put SHU up 71-70 with 1:14 to play.  Whitaker forced a steal and Meis drilled another three pointer to extend the lead to four with 19 seconds left.  SHU got one more defensive stop to close out the win.

Meis led four Griffins in double figures with 20 points.  Green and Kedrick Curtis each scored twelve.  Gillespie finished with 11 points.  Moon ended the contest with eight.

The Griffins will return to action on December 30th when they travel to Bloomsburg.
