Late Rally Comes up Just Short in PSAC Crossover

Seton Hill continued their three game homestand with a PSAC Crossover matchup with Lock Haven on Monday evening.

SHU trailed by nine in the fourth quarter as a late rally came up just short in a 76-74 loss to the Bald Eagles.  SHU falls to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC while Lock Haven improves to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC.

Both teams got off to fast starts in the first quarter as both teams went over the twenty point mark.  Lock Haven took an early 9-3 lead over the Griffins and the Griffins trailed 16-9 midway through the quarter.  Back to back layups from Sakeria Haralson and Christiane Frye cut the lead to three.  Lock Haven answered with a three point play as they took a 19-13 lead with 3:50 to play.  Another Haralson layin, a three from Hallie Cowan and a bucket from Mia Kalich gave SHU a 20-19  lead with 2:40 remaining.  LHU led 23-20 with just over two minutes to play but the Griffins closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 26-23 lead.

Abby Mankins hit a basket and Helene Cowan drained a three as SHU built a 31-23 lead just over a minute into the second half.  Four straight points from Frye put SHU in front 37-28 and baskets from Corrine Eisner and Kalich extended the lead to 41-30 with 3:20 to play before the half.  LHU scored the final six points of the half to trim the lead to 41-36.

The Bald Eagles scored the first four of the second half before a three pointer from Hallie Cowan ended the 10-0 run and put SHU in front 44-40 with just over six minutes to play in the third.  A Helene Cowan basket gave SHU a 50-45 lead with just over two minutes to play but the Bald Eagles scored the final six of the quarter to take a 51-50 lead.

Lock Haven extended thelr lead to 63-54 with 5:36 left in the fourth.  A three point play from Eisner and a Frye basket cut the lead back to four with 4:44 to play.  With 2:48 left, Helene Cowan's three point play trimmed the lead to 66-65.  The teams exchanged free throws over the next two minutes and SHU trailed 71-69 with a minute to play.  Kalich answered a LHU basket to cut the lead to 73-71 with 35 seconds left.  After two LHU free throws, Hallie Cowan drilled a three with three seconds left to cut the lead to 75-74.  LHU hit one of two free throws and a last second shot to tie from the Griffins just missed.

Frye and Hallie Cowan each scored 16 to lead the Griffins.  Helene Cowan tossed in 15 points. Mankins and Kalich each added eight.

SHU will host Mansfield on Tuesday evening in another PSAC Crossover.
