Seton Hill played their home opener on Monday evening as they hosted Davis & Elkins in a non conference matchup in the McKenna Center.
The Griffins outscored the Senators 39-37 in each half in route to a 78-74 victory. SHU improves to 3-1 on the season while the Senators fall to 4-2.
The Senators jumped out to an early 7-3 lead over the Griffins before a three pointer from
James Rice and a
Drew Green layup put the Griffins in front 8-7 with 17:13 left in the half.
Caleb Whitaker followed with two free throws and Rice drained another three as SHU took a 13-7 lead at the first media timeout. D&E scored the next six points to tie the score at 13. A layup from Whitaker and back to back three pointers from Rice and
Ryan Meis gave SHU a 23-15 lead with just under nine minutes to play.
Davis & Elkins cut the Griffins lead to one before a quick 5-0 run from the Griffins gave them a 32-26 lead with four minutes to play. Meis hit a three and
Dimitrios Sklavenitis scored a basket in the run. SHU built their lead to 39-33 but the Senators scored the final four points of the half as SHU led 39-37 at the half.
The Senators opened the second half with an 11-5 run as they took a 48-44 lead four minutes into the half. Seton Hill retook the lead, 53-51, on a Rice basket with 12:56 left in the second half. A three from
Kedrick Curtis put the Griffins in front 64-59 with 8:15 left. The Senators cut the lead back to one with 3:54 left.
SHU responded with a 4-0 run as they took a 75-70 lead with 2:47 to play. Green hit a basket and Meis followed with two free throws. Sklavenitis hit three free throws down the stretch to close out the win.
The Griffins had five players reach double figures. Meis led the Griffins with 16 points. Sklavenitis added 12 points. Rice tossed in 11 while Whitaker and Curtis each scored ten.
Seton Hill will travel to Shepherd and Shippensburg next weekend for PSAC Crossovers.
