Seton Hill returned to play after the Thanksgiving break with a non conference matchup at Virginia State on Sunday afternoon.
The Griffins rallied to tie the game late but Virginia State hit two late free throws for an 88-86 victory over the Griffins. SHU falls to 2-3 overall while the Trojans improve to 4-0.
SHU took an early 5-3 lead on a three pointer from
Abby Mankins just over two minutes into the contest. A layup from
Mia Kalich gave SHU a 12-11 lead midway through the quarter. A three pointer from
Hallie Cowan and a three point play from Kalich extended the lead to 18-11 with 3:42 to play in the quarter. A three pointer from
Helene Cowan and two Kalich free throws pushed the lead to double figures at 27-16 with 1:10 to play. SHU led 29-23 at the end of the quarter.
Virginia State opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to take a one point lead. SHU responded with a 7-0 run of their own on a
Joi Burleigh basket,
Hallie Cowan three and a pair of Kalich free throws as SHU took a 36-30 lead with 7:25 to play. The Griffins built the lead up to eight, 40-32, on a Mankins basket with 4:10 to play before the half. Virginia State scored the final eight points of the half to tie the score at 40 at the break.
The Trojans outscored the Griffins 25-16 in the third quarter as they took a 65-56 lead after three quarters.
Hallie Cowan hit a three and Mankins followed with a layup as the Griffins cut the lead to 72-68 midway through the fourth quarter. A three point play from
Christiane Frye trimmed the lead to 76-74 with 4:11 to play. Virginia State built their lead back to as many as seven but the Griffins used a three pointer from
Hallie Cowan and a basket from Kalich to cut the lead to 85-84 with 1:10 left. VSU hit one of two free throws to increase the lead to two.
Sakeria Haralson tied the game at 86 with two free throws with 52 seconds left. The Trojans hit two free throws with eight seconds left and a last second shot from the Griffins came up short.
Five Griffins reached double figures in the loss.
Hallie Cowan led SHU with 23 points. Mankins finished with 14 points. Kalich added 13. Frye scored 12 and
Helene Cowan added ten points. Haralson just missed double figures with nine points.
SHU will travel to Shepherd and Shippensburg next weekend for PSAC Crossover action.
