Seton Hill returned home as they hosted Malone on Saturday afternoon in a non conference matchup in the McKenna Center.
The Griffins used a huge second quarter as they were able to defeat the Pioneers by a 71-60 score. SHU is now 2-2 on the season while Malone falls to 1-3.
SHU went on a 9-0 run in a minute span as they took a 12-5 lead over Malone with 6:30 to play in the first half.
Abby Mankins opened the run with a three and
Christiane Frye followed with a three point play. Frye then closed the run out with a three pointer. Malone tied the game at 14, 16 and 18 before back to back layups from
Paula Llovich gave SHU a 22-18 lead with 1:52 to play. The Pioneers cut the lead to 22-21 before a three from Llovich and a Frye layup gave SHU a 27-21 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Mia Kalich opened the second quarter with a basket as SHU took an eight point lead. The Griffins used a 10-0 run in the middle portion of the quarter as they took a 41-25 lead with 4:09 left. Frye hit a three and
Joi Burleigh closed out the run with a bucket. Layups from Kalich, Llovich and
Helene Cowan pushed the lead to 20 before the Griffins settled for a 47-31 halftime lead.
Buckets from
Sakeria Haralson and Kalich pushed the lead to twenty to start the third quarter. The Griffins led 56-40 at the end of the third quarter.
Kalich, Frye and Mankins scored to open the fourth quarter as SHU pushed their lead to twenty two points. Malone battled back and cut the lead to eight with 3:11 to play. Frye's three pointer pushed the lead to eleven with 2:07 to play as SHU closed out the win.
Frye led the Griffins with 16 points.
Helene Cowan and
Mia Kalich each posted a double double. Cowan had 15 and 12 while Kalich had 13 and 11.
SHU will travel to Virginia State next Sunday afternoon.
