Griffins Drop Game Two of Regional Challenge

The Griffins continued play in the Atlantic Regional Challenge on Saturday evening as they hosted Fairmont State in the final game of the challenge. 

The Falcons outscored the Griffins 30-23 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 92-84 victory.  SHU drops to 1-1 overall while FSU improves to 2-0.  

Fairmont State scored the first nine points of the contest as they built an early lead.  SHU cut the lead to 25-20 on a Christiane Frye layup late in the quarter but the Falcons scored the final three points of the quarter to take a 28-20 lead into the second quarter.  

The Falcons continued to lead through the entire second quarter and carried a 42-31 lead into the halftime break.  

Over the first six minutes of the third quarter, the Griffins outscored the Falcons 26-10 as they took a 57-52 lead with 4:06 left in the third quarter. Helene Cowan closed out the run with a three point play.  Fairmont fought back and took a 62-61 lead into the fourth quarter.  

Back to back baskets from Frye and Abby Mankins put the Griffins in front 65-62 early in the fourth quarter.  The Falcons answered back with eight straight as they took a 70-65 lead.  FSU built their lead to as many as eight but two baskets from Frye cut the lead to 84-82 with 1:52 left.  The Griffins would not get any closer down the stretch as the Falcons went 4-4 from the line.  

Frye led SHU with 34 points.  Mankins finished with 17 points on 8-10 shooting.  Helene Cowan finished with 16 points,

The Griffins will travel to Salem on Wednesday for a non conference matchup.
