Green's Free Throws Give Griffins 97-96 OT Win

Seton Hill opened its 2023-24 season on the road in West Liberty, WV with a matchup with Wheeling on Friday evening in the MEC/PSAC Challenge.

Drew Green hit two free throws with 0.2 seconds to play in overtime to give the Griffins a 97-96 victory over the Cardinals as SHU opens the season with a 1-0 record.

The first half of the first twenty minutes was pretty evenly played as neither team could grown their lead more that three points.  Three straight baskets from Dimitrios Sklavenitis and a three pointer from James Rice gave SHU a 30-21 lead with 7:53 left in the first half.  Back to back three pointers from Ryan Meis extended the SHU lead to 45-30 with just over a minute to play.  The Griffins led 46-33 at the half.

In the first three minutes of the second half, Wheeling opened with a 13-3 run to cut the Griffins lead to 49-46.  Three points from Kedrick Curtis and a three from Meis pushed the lead back to nine at 55-46 with 13:48 left.  Six straight from the Griffins on buckets from Camden Brewer, Sklavenitis and Caleb Whitaker pushed the lead to 61-48 with 11:45 left.  SHU continued to lead by double figures after a Drew Green jumper with 6:45 remaining.  Meis hit one of two free throws to give SHU a 82-74 lead with 1:39 left.  Wheeling then outscored the Griffins 11-3 down the stretch to send the game to overtime.

A three point play from Sklavenitis and a layup from Meis put the Griffins in front 90-87 two minutes into overtime.  Jimmy Moon's three pointer gave SHU a 93-89 advantage with 2:39 left.  After Wheeling tied the score at 93, Sklavenitis hit two free throws to put SHU back in front with 1:23 left.  The Cards answered with a three pointer to take a one point lead.  Green was then fouled on a three pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining and hit two of the three free throws to give SHU the win.

Meis led SHU with 25 points.  Moon and Green each added 16.  Sklavenitis added 15 points.

The Griffins will continue play in West Liberty on Saturday as they battle the host Hilltoppers.
