The Griffins made the trip up Interstate-79 to Erie for a PSAC West matchup with #22 Gannon on Wednesday evening.
Seton Hill led for nearly the entire contest as they defeated the top 25 ranked Golden Knights, 87-72. The win ended a twelve game winning streak for Gannon and was their first loss in eleven home contests. SHU is now 14-8 and 7-6 in the PSAC while Gannon is 18-3 and 10-3 in the PSAC.
Both teams got off to good starts as the teams played a tight first half of the quarter with neither team leading by three points and the score being tied at 11 midway through the quarter. In less than a minute, the Griffins went on a 7-0 run to take an 18-11 lead with 3:32 left in the quarter.
Christiane Frye and
Alie Seto each hit two free throws and
Hallie Cowan completed the run with a three point play. Frye added a three pointer and a Seto layup put the Griffins in front 23-16 after one quarter of play.
Helene Cowan hit a three pointer to open the second quarter as SHU built a ten point lead at 26-16.
Courtney Tomas hit a three pointer and Frye added two free throws as SHU led 31-24 at the second quarter media timeout. Three straight layups from Seto,
Hallie Cowan and Tomas extended the Griffins lead to 37-26 with 3:12 to play before the half. The 6-0 run forced the Golden Knights to call a timeout. The run continued after the timeout as Frye finished off a three point play and Tomas connected on a layup to put SHU in front 42-26 with just over a minute to play. Seto hit two free throws before the Knights hit three free throws just before the buzzer as they cut the SHU lead to 44-31 at the break.
Gannon scored five of the first seven points of the second half to cut the SHU lead to ten. The Griffins then answered with a 7-1 run as they built the lead back to 16, 53-37, with 6:03 left to play in the quarter. The Golden Knights got back to within ten later in the quarter but a three point play from
Helene Cowan and an
Abby Mankins jumper gave SHU a 62-49 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Griffins were able to keep the double digit lead over the first half of the fourth quarter. Each time Gannon got to within ten the Griffins would answer. Seto hit a big three pointer with 6:34 to play to push the lead back to thirteen. Later in the quarter, a quick 6-0 run from the Golden Knights cut the SHU lead to 71-64 with 4:42 to play. Seto ended the Gannon run with another three pointer to extend the lead back to ten with four minutes left. The Griffins were able to break the Gannon press and get easy layups from the Cowan sisters and SHU went 7-8 from the line in the final minute to close out the win.
Frye led the Griffins with 21 points. Seto finished with 18 points and Tomas added 17.
Helene Cowan added 14 points and
Hallie Cowan scored 11.
The Griffins will return to Erie on Saturday when they take on Mercyhurst in another PSAC West contest.
