The Griffins returned to PSAC West play as they hosted California (PA) on Monday evening.
Four Griffins reached double figures but it was not enough as CalU defeated the Griffins by an 87-80 score. SHU falls to 13-8 overall and 6-6 in the PSAC while CalU improves to 11-7 overall and 7-5 in the PSAC. Â
Hallie Cowan hit two three pointers in the early going for the Griffins. They first gave SHU a 3-0 lead and the second tied the contest at six. Two layups from
Sakeria Haralson later in the half cut the Vulcans lead to four each time. The Vulcans took a 19-12 lead into the second quarter. Â
Both teams started the second quarter shooting from behind the arc. SHU got threes from
Alie Seto and
Hallie Cowan in the first three minutes of the quarter but each time CalU answered with a three and led 29-21 with 7:15 to play in the half. Two free throws from Seto and another
Hallie Cowan three tied the game at 34 with 3:17 left. Another
Hallie Cowan three cut the Vulcan lead to 40-39 with 1:47 to play but the Vulcans scored the final seven points of the half as they took a 47-39 lead into the halftime break. Â
CalU scored seven of the first nine points of the second half as they pushed their lead to 54-41 with 6:33 left in the third. The Vulcans were able to push their lead to as many as 16 but a three point play from
Emma Fischer at the buzzer cut the lead to 72-62 entering the fourth. Â
A three pointer from Seto cut the lead to 76-70 with 6:13 left and a jumper from Haralson and a three from
Christiane Frye trimmed the lead to 80-75 with four minutes left. Frye hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to four with three minutes left. Two free throws from Haralson made it 82-78 with 2:14 left. The Vulcans answered with a basket before
Hallie Cowan trimmed the lead to 84-80 with 39 seconds left. The Vulcans hit three of four free throws down the stretch to put the game away. Â
Seto led the Griffins with 20 points. Frye finished with 17 points and
Hallie Cowan added 16. Haralson also reached double figures with 10 points.
The Griffins will travel to Gannon for a PSAC West matchup on Wednesday evening. Â
