Griffins Defeated by UPJ in PSAC West Action

The Griffin women's basketball team kicked off a three game homestand with a PSAC West contest against Pitt Johnstown on Wednesday evening.  

UPJ outscored the Griffins by a 48-24 in the middle two quarters as they defeated the Griffins by a 73-53 score.  SHU falls to 12-7 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC while UPJ improves to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in the PSAC.  

SHU came out of the gates fast as they took an early 8-2 lead less than two and a half minutes into the contest.  Christiane Frye opened the scoring while Alie Seto followed with a three pointer.  Sakeria Haralson closed out the early run with a three point play.  UPJ outscored the Griffins 11-4 over the final 7:30 as they took a 13-12 lead into the second quarter.  

A three point play from Helene Cowan cut the UPJ lead to 21-20 with 6:24 remaining before the half.  The Mountain Cats then ran off a 17-3 run to close out the quarter and take a 38-23 lead into the halftime break.  

UPJ then opened the third quarter scoring the first nine points as they built their lead to 47-23 with 6:54 to play in the third.  The lead built to as many as 30 before Frye scored the final five points of the quarter as SHU trailed 61-36 after three quarters of play.  

The Griffins were able to outscore UPJ 17-12 in the fourth quarter of action.

Frye led SHU with 15 points.  Helene Cowan added nine points while Maddy Moore finished with eight.  Haralson added seven points and eight rebounds.  

SHU will host Bloomsburg in a PSAC Crossover matchup on Saturday.
